I Am a Child of God Color Code

I simplified a traditional crack the code and made a printable by typing out the words, then color coding and then disguising the words by adding a background color – easy peasy!!

What you’ll do is post the “code” and see if your Primary class can decipher the code by figuring out what the colors represent and other “clues” about what they might mean.

My Primary class was able to figure out each of the colors representations as well as other great deductions such as the length of the color relates to how long the word is and that the black words were mostly all the “small” connecting words.

This can be a great tool for helping the kids think about what the words are with some clues to help them figure them out as you sing through the song. It helps with memorization of words.

Just sing through the song and ask them after each time you sing through some of the things they discovered. When they’ve figured out all the clues, then you can have them sing only one color or skip one of the colors.

I used the code cracker for the 2nd verse, but included 3 verses in the printable word color code.

How to Play I Am a
Child of God Color Code

Sing through I Am a Child of God before introducing the activity.

Post the posters below for the verses you’d like to include. I recommend including just one verse. You can include or leave out the chorus.

Tell the children something happened with your posters – all the words got covered in colors! Ask them what they notice? (Colors, size of the boxes, some words visible, etc).

Can they help you decode the posters? Sing through the poster while the children look for clues!

After each time singing through the song, have the kids help you decode part of the poster. You can identify what one of the colors represents as a group or start to add in actual words. You can write in the missing words over the boxes, or just leave them colored but with the key decoded up on the board as a help.

Extension Activities:

  • Have the primary children sing only the plain uncolored words. Switch and sing only the colored words.
  • Divide the room into 2-4 groups. Assign each group a color. Each group sings the words in their color. All groups sing the plain uncolored words! Rotate colors and sing again.
  • Come up with a fun action for each color. It could be a clap for orange, a pat for green, a jump for red, a stomp for purple, etc!
  • Cut out all the colored boxes. Leave the rest of the page intact, as much as possible. Post the posters with all the colored boxes missing. Mix the colored words up and spread them out on the whiteboard. Have the children help you place the boxes back into the right spots! Size and color will help. This is an advanced challenge, probably best for older children.
