Choose the Right Way Hand Bells

Sing through Choose the Right Way (flip chart here) song once, before bringing out the hand bells. This is a great way to transition or start off Primary and can remind the children of what song you will be singing.

If this is your first-time using handbells, you might invite two children to come up front and have one hold the yellow hand bell and the other child hold the light blue hand bell. Have them stand up front and follow along with the chart, ringing their bells when it’s time.

You can use a conducting wand, rhythm stick, chopstick, or anything similar to point out the spot you are at in the song, so they know right when to ring their bell. Using just 2 children will help both you and the Primary children to get a feel for using hand bells.

Once you’ve made it through the song one time with your first two helpers, you can take a moment to explain the rules of using hand bells (don’t touch the white ball, keep them on your bell until it’s time to ring them, don’t ring them hard or crazy, etc).

Or, ask the children at this point what they noticed about using the bells. You can spend a minute or two hearing their observations, which will help them be better at using the bells and being more mindful and gentle with the bells.

They might point out things like the different colors and you can explain that each different color represents a different note with red being the lowest note. They might notice what made the best ringing sound, such as holding the bell with the handle at the bottom and ringing straight forward which can help you talk about technique.

Or they might notice what words played a note or other types of observations.

Now, add 2 more helpers and this time use yellow, light blue, dark blue, and green. Sing through the song again.

Add more helpers, mixing up who is up front helping you each time. This time add all 8 bells. If you have very young helpers, you might hand them a purple or red bell which are only played 2 and 3 times, respectively.

Extension Activities:

  • If your Primary children are pros at using hand bells – you can jump right in with all the bells the first time through. This will give more kids the chance to play. Repeat through the song with new helpers until everyone has had a chance! If you have a large Primary, you can use more than one bell set with 2-3 children playing each colored note.
  • Use the handbells only for the chorus! This can be a great way to remove any potential distraction from the verse while learning the words but still have fun with a simple part.
