Using a Cup Pattern in Primary

Sometimes it can be tough to keep Senior primary kiddos engaged in singing time. As they grow older, they need a little bit of a challenge to keep them interested in the activity. This activity is great because it requires some concentration and focus, which should help keep reverence in primary.

Before introducing the cup pattern, begin by reviewing the words to Did Jesus Really Live Again? If you are feeling confident with the words, introduce the activity by demonstrating the cup pattern. You might want to write or tape up the cup pattern on the board to help as you teach the children this cup pattern.

If you’ve never used a cup pattern in primary before, it can be so much fun! Simple cup patterns can be a great way to keep your primary children engaged as you review songs.

Did Jesus Really Live Again Cup Pattern

So what kinds of patterns can you use for this song? I’ve created a simple pattern using a few movements that can be a great way to introduce cup patterns in primary! Here are a few actions you will need to know for this pattern!

Lap, Lap: For this action, hold the bottom of the cup with your hand and turn the cup upside down, tapping the lid of the cup against your lap.

Ex. “Did Jesus,” “Yes when the”

Palm, Palm: For this action, hold the cup with your dominant hand and hold your other hand out and tap the bottom of the cup to your opposite palm.

Ex. Really Live Again,” “Third day”

Hand Switch: All you have to do for this movement is switch the plastic cup into your non-dominant hand. This is usually a quick switch before beginning a new phrase.

Ex. Switch hands between the phrases.

Pass Behind Your Back: This action is exactly how it sounds! Just bring the cup around your back and pass from one hand to the other.

Ex. “He wakened and he left the tomb”

And that’s all you need to know! With just these 4 actions, you can have some creative cup patterns that your kids will love. Don’t be afraid to add your own actions! I especially love when I ask my primary kids for ideas. They can be so imaginative!

Once you’ve tried the cup pattern a few times, start putting the pattern to music. You might invite a child to come up as the “leader” and lead the cup pattern while you sing the song.
