This week, I was browsing through the dollar store and found these cute beach balls! I immediately thought of all my primary kids and just had to get one. You can also grab one pretty cheap from Amazon.

Since we’re working on reviewing for our primary program, I have been trying to think of some creative ways to keep the kids engaged while we review! We have so many fun ideas here on Primary Singing, from football themed reviews to a cute fishing-themed program tracker!

10 FUN Ways to Use a Beach Ball in Primary!

We’ve compiled a list of 10 different ways to incorporate a beach ball during singing time! Each of these ideas can be used to practice nearly any primary song, and can also be used to review a bunch of songs! With little to no prep required, these activities are sure to make a “splash!” 😉

1. Beach Ball Song Pick

Use this Beach Ball Song Pick activity for a fun way to choose what song you’ll be singing! Before primary, blow up the beach ball and write all the names of your primary program songs on the ball with a sharpie.

Start singing one of your program songs. While you sing, pass around the beach ball. At the end of the song, whoever is holding the beach ball stops and sees what song their hand is touching. Continue passing around the beach ball as you review your songs! Super simple!

2. Beach Ball Bowling…Without the Pins

Have some fun bowling for your primary songs with this Beach Ball Bowling activity! This is another fun way to choose what song to sing, and no pins are required for this activity. It requires a little bit of prep work.

Write the name of each program song on an 8×11 piece of paper. Tape the papers to the floor in primary. Arrange them in a way that they are close together like pins, but not overlapping.

During primary, have children take turns rolling the ball and trying to land on one of the songs. Whichever song the ball lands on is the song you sing next!

3. Beach Ball Actions

This activity is similar to #1, but instead of using the beach ball to choose the song, use the ball for a fun way to sing the song! Just like the instructions for the Song Pick, blow up the beach ball before primary. Write a bunch of silly ways to sing the song. Grab some ideas from our post 110+ Different Ways to Sing Primary Songs!

Have the children pass around the ball during primary as you sing your song. Then, have your pianist stop the music at a random spot in the music. Whoever is holding the beach ball looks where their right hand is touching, and that’s the action you’ll do until the next pause in the music! You can get through lots of songs in a fun way!

4. Laundry Beach Basketball

For this Laundry Beach Basketball activity, just bring in a laundry basket and a beach ball and you’re all set! During primary, choose a song to sing and separate the class into two teams. After singing through a verse of the song, have a teacher pick the team with the most people singing reverently.

Have a member of that team come to the front and try to make a basket with the beach ball. You could have different tape markers on the floor marking different amounts of points. If the player makes the basket, they get the points! Keep track of points and declare a winner at the end of singing time!

5. Keep the Beach Ball Off the Floor

This Keep the Beach Ball Off the Floor activity is sure to keep your primary kids on their toes! Explain to the children that you’ll be playing a game of “Name that Tune.” Have the kids get in a circle and try to see how many passes they can keep the beach ball up for.

Each time someone touches the ball, have them count aloud. When the ball touches the floor, that number is the number of notes the kids get to guess the song! This activity may be a little better for Senior primary, but I bet Junior primary kids could enjoy it too!

6. Beach Ball Toss

This Beach Ball Toss is a fun way to add some competition as you review your primary program songs! For this activity, have 2-3 children come to the front. As they toss the beach ball, have them sing the song (accompanied by the piano). See who can keep singing while they pass the ball (It’s harder than you think!)

If you have shy primary children, you can help them by singing along, or even have their class sing with them too.

7. Beach Ball Hot Potato

This one is pretty simple. We love playing hot potato in primary! After you pick a song to sing, pass around the beach ball until the music randomly stops. The person holding the beach ball must sing or say the rest of the phrase!

8. Beach Ball Dynamics

For this Beach Ball Dynamics activity, use the beach ball to indicate how loud or soft the children should sing. When you hold the beach ball high in the air, the children can sing as loud as they can. When it gets low to the ground, they see how quiet they can sing! You can also let the children take turns being the person in charge of dynamics!

9. Don’t Let the Beach Ball Deflate!

This Don’t Let the Beach Ball Deflate activity is a clever way to try to get through all your primary program songs! Blow up the beach ball before primary. At the beginning of primary, let the cap loose and have the kids pass around the beach ball as you try to sing through your entire program. See if you can make it through all your songs before the beach ball is flat!

10. Beach Ball Color Wheel

For this fun Beach Ball Color Wheel, have each color of the beach ball represent each class in primary. You may want to write the colors on the board so it’s easier to keep track.

Start by choosing which primary song to sing. While singing, have the pianist stop the music. Then, have a child close their eyes and come up and grab the beach ball. Whichever color they are touching chooses the group that will sing until the next pause!
