Daddy’s Homecoming Memory Pictures

When it comes to Father’s Day songs, this one is always a favorite of mine! There have been so many sweet songs about fathers released in the last few years. Whether you are teaching a Father’s Day song from the Children’s Songbook or from another source, this song is a great one to add to the list of songs your primary kids know!

Start by compiling simple pictures and words that represent lyrics from Daddy’s Homecoming. When I started singing through this song in my head, I realized just how many symbols or pictures could be used to represent the lyrics!

We have a single-page printable with 12 different pictures are 4 words for this song. You can also print larger versions of each picture.

Before primary, arrange the pictures on the board and turn the board so that the kids can’t see the pictures until you reveal them.

Start off singing time by singing through Daddy’s Homecoming lyrics. Tell the kids that you’ll be testing their memory in singing time today! How many pictures do you think you can remember? Look for shapes, colors, and words that you can easily recall.

Then, set a timer for 1 minute. Turn over the board and let the kids look at the picture and see how many they can remember! After the timer is up, turn the board back around or cover the pictures quickly! Sing through the song again.

After you have sung through the song, have the kids raise their hands to recall pictures they remember. When they run out of guesses, sing through the song again and let the kids continue guessing!

At the end of primary, reveal the remaining pictures and share your gratitude for fathers.

For another fun challenge, have the children try to put all the pictures and words in the correct order for the song! Start with the “Eye” image, then work your way to the end! We also have 3 different extension ideas for this activity below, so be sure to check those out as well!

Memory Pictures

It’s not too tricky to figure out how each of these pictures fit into the song. However, I’ve given a couple examples here of each symbol and which word they represent in the song.

EYE, SMILEY FACE, CLOCK, MAN, HOUSE – “I’m so glad when Daddy comes home”

BEE – “Glad as I can Be” (You could also make a copy of the smiley face & eye for this line)

CLAP, MEGAPHONE, #4, JOY, HIKER, KNEE – “I clap my hands and shout for joy then climb upon his knee.

ARROWS, HUG – “Put my arms “around” his neck, hug him tight like this”

LIPS – “A great, big kiss.”

Extension Activities:

  • For a bonus challenge, see if the kids can correctly name the picture AND color of each image (I remember a PURPLE CLOCK)
  • Write a different way to sing on the back of each picture. Each time a child correctly guesses a picture, bring that picture to the front of the board. Sing through the song using funny voices, movements, or actions!
  • Divide the class into a few teams! Have teams work together to see how many pictures they remember. After turning the board around and letting the kids see the pictures, give each group a piece of paper. Have them secretly write down the pictures they remember. See which group can remember the most!
