Daddy’s Homecoming Silly Verse
I have enjoyed many Father’s Day sacrament meetings where the primary children joyfully sang Daddy’s Homecoming! This song is such a primary classic! With such a well-known song, it’s likely that your primary children have already been introduced to this song.
Whether you are practicing this song to sing in sacrament meeting or just as a fun activity on Father’s Day, these silly verses are sure to be a hit! Keep your primary children engaged by swapping some of the lyrics for new, silly ones!
To start this activity, review Daddy’s Homecoming at the beginning of primary! Then, choose one of the silly verses to sing. Each silly verse has a different emotion with some silly lyrics. The ending of the song is the same for each verse.

Since the silly verses will be new to the kids, I recommend introducing one silly verse at a time. Choose one of your favorites, and have the children sing through the silly verse a few times.
Then, choose another silly verse and sing through it a few times! Post the new lyrics on the board. You can even choose someone to come up and lead the song if you want to add another fun element!
After singing through some or all of the silly verses, sing the regular version one last time and share your testimony of fathers.

It was so much fun to recreate the lyrics to this favorite Father’s Day song! For each of these silly verses, I started with an emotion that the kids might feel, and then a reason why they might feel this way!
These verses are all in good fun, and I hope you and your primary kids enjoy them! If you are feeling extra brave, you can try writing a verse during primary with the kids!
Silly Verse #1:
“I’m so SAD when Daddy is GONE, SAD as I can be.
While he’s GONE I wait for him until the doorbell rings.”
Silly Verse #2:
“I’m so MAD when Daddy is WRONG, MAD as I can be!
When Dad is WRONG, I sing this song, “I’m grumpy, grumpy, grumpy!”
Silly Verse #3:
“I’m so HAPPY when Daddy has TREATS, HAPPY as I can be!
Grab a TREAT, share a piece, and take the rest for me!”
Silly Verse #4:
“I’m so SILLY when Daddy is NEAR, SILLY as I can be!
Pull him NEAR, and tickle his chin and play game or three!”
Extension Activities:
- Adding actions is a really fun way to keep this song engaging! Have the kids come up with some silly actions to do with the new verses!
- Cut up each line of the silly verses into word strips. Then, have the children choose 4 word strips and put the new song together! See how many different combinations you can put together!
- Before singing the song each time, have a child choose an emotion (ex. Upset, happy, joyful, silly, happy, mad). Sing the song with all the lyrics the same except for the emotions. Each time an emotion comes up in the song, pick a different emotion to sing.
- Cut out the emotion cards and use them to pick out an emotion verse to sing with. You can use the emojis, the word, or both!
