Father’s Day is quickly approaching, and I have enjoyed teaching the sweet song Fathers in primary. If you’ve been asked to sing in sacrament meeting this Father’s Day, this song is a beautiful tribute to our fathers on earth and our Father in Heaven.

This sweet and simple Fathers Testimony Sharing lesson is a beautiful way to introduce this song and help children remember how special fathers are.

Father’s Day can be a wonderful time to celebrate the fathers in our lives. For some, it can be a very sensitive time. There may be children in your primary who do not have righteous fathers in their home due to various circumstances.

If you aren’t familiar with Fathers, this song has 3 verses that teach about different fathers in our lives. Now, I typically only teach 1-2 verses of a primary song to keep things simple for the little ones.

However, I definitely recommend teaching all three verses of this song. Here’s a little breakdown of this song:

1st Verse – Father of Our Home: This verse honors righteous fathers that lead their families with love.

2nd Verse – Father of our Ward: This verse honors the father of our ward, the Bishop. When I sing this verse, I also think of righteous ministering brothers and presidencies that guide the ward.

3rd Verse – Father of Us All: This verse honors Heavenly Father, the eternal father of all children on earth. This verse is so tender and helps children remember their Heavenly Father.

Each of these verses allows us to ponder and reflect on the fathers in our lives. Whether or not we have fathers living in our homes, we can find peace in knowledge that we all have a loving Heavenly Father.

Fathers Testimony Sharing

The idea for this spiritual connections lesson came from my own experience introducing this song in primary. When I introduced Fathers in primary for the first time, I kept things very simple. I chose to ask the children about different fathers in their lives.

Then, I shared a simple testimony of our Heavenly Father and expressed gratitude for righteous earthly fathers and Priesthood leaders. The Spirit filled the room and the children were so reverent as we started learning the words to the first verse.

For this activity, invite a few primary teachers or ward leaders to share their testimonies of fathers during singing time. As you share these simple testimonies, invite the primary children to think about their own fathers.

You might choose to think of some attributes of fathers and remind children of the ultimate example of a righteous, loving father: Our Heavenly Father. After you share your testimonies, then begin learning the words to this beautiful song.
