You can use this activity to review any song you are learning this month or to specifically practice your Mother’s Day song for sacrament meeting!
Mother’s Day In Her Shoes
There are so many wonderful Mother’s Day songs (see our printable list!) to choose from! Whether you are teaching a song specifically for mothers or a song about families, you can use this fun In Her Shoes activity to review!
Most Mother’s Day songs are pretty short, so you might even be able to teach a few themed songs leading up to this holiday! I’ll be introducing a few different songs for singing time on Mother’s Day.
The idea for this activity comes from the notion of “following in their footsteps.” Help the kids think about mothers they can look up to with this silly singing time activity!
Before primary, prepare by gathering 8-10 pairs of “Mom’s shoes.” These can be any kind of silly shoes! The more options you have, the better! Put all the shoes in a large basket.
At the beginning of primary, start by reviewing your Mother’s Day song once. Then, explain to the primary kids that there are many wonderful examples of righteous mothers. Say, “We want to walk in their footsteps. Today, we get to!”
Then, bring out the shoe basket and invite a child to come up and choose a pair of shoes! Have them put on the shoes and lead one verse of the song!
Then, choose someone else to come up to pick a pair of shoes and lead the song. Continue reviewing and inviting children to come up and try on different pairs of shoes!
Although this is a silly activity, take a few moments at the end of primary to share your testimony about mothers and gratitude for righteous examples of mothers in your life.
Different Types of Shoes & Ways to Sing:
I came up with 9 different types of shoes with 9 different ways to sing your Mother’s Day song! You can find this chart in the printable later in this post! During primary, choose a pair of shoes or pick one of the pictures on the printable chart.
Each pair of shoes correlates with a different way to sing. Most of the ways to sing include different actions, but some change the tempo and dynamics in the song! Here are some examples of types of shoes and their actions!
- High Heels: Stand on your tip-toes for the entire song!
- Running Shoes: Jog in place while you sing!
- Slippers: Pretend to be sleeping (close your eyes, sing quietly)
- Flip Flops: “Swim” with your arms
- Rain Boots: Stomp your feet
- Cowboy Boots: Lasso while you sing!
- Flats: Sway from left and right
- Sneakers: Swish your hands
- Dress Shoes: Bow or curtsy at the end of the song
Extension Activities:
- For each pair of shoes, think of a clever way for the kids to sing the song. For example, if you pick a pair of running shoes, you might have the kids run/jog in place while singing!
- When each child comes up to lead, ask them to share a positive quality of their mother or a mother in their life. You can write all these qualities on the board and look at all the qualities at the end of singing time. This is a great way to help the kids see what kinds of righteous qualities they want to develop.
- If you are singing multiple Mother’s Day songs, have the names of songs written on popsicle sticks for kids to choose when they come up! Or, stick a sticky note to the bottom of the shoe.
