Everyone in Primary will love this fun Redeemer of Israel Cup Actions singing time lesson plan! It is engaging and fun but also really purposeful in helping to represent some of the words and speak to the rhythm and help the kids creating a meaningful experience with this beloved Hymn.

Redeemer of Israel Cup Actions
How to Play:
*Downloads are available at the bottom of the post when signed in!*
Sing through Redeemer of Israel (flip chart here) once before bringing out the plastic cups.
Then, pull out the cups and start the first pattern to demonstrate it. Can you follow along? Try the pattern with your hands.
Start from the beginning and have the kids follow with their hands mimicking the pattern. Freeze after “Redeemer of Israel” line.
Explain the rules of using the cups (follow along, don’t crush them, etc) and then pass them out.
Start from the beginning and freeze after each line to introduce the next action, then build up adding an additional line of the song each time. Or, simply let them follow your lead, and sing through the song a few time in a row until everyone has the actions down.
Invite a class to come up to the front and lead the actions. Then let another class lead!
Redeemer of Israel Cup Actions:
- Pass out 2 cups to each child. They will hold one in each hand.
- “Redeemer of Israel” – Lap / Clap / Lap / Clap / Lap / Clap
Clap both cups onto your lap, then clap them together with the open sides facing, repeat x2. - “Our only delight” – Smile
Hold up the 2 cups like a big smile with the bottom ends touching in front of your face. - “On whom for a blessing we call” – Ear & Mouth
Put one cup over your ear and the other cup in front of your mouth like you are making a call! - “Our shadow by day” – Low Dab
Hold both cups down to the far right way from you like they are casting a shadow. - “And our pillar by night” – Pillar
Stack the cups on top of each other with the bottom ends touching, making a pillar. - “Our King our Deliv’rer our All” – 3 Cheers
Clink cups with a neighbor (or your own cups if social distancing) on King, Deliv’rer, All
Extension Activities:
- You can teach the actions with just their hands first, then pass out the cups after and let them try it with the cups if you have a large Primary this can help cut down on noise and chaos.
- Ask the kids to help you come up with the next action! You can either add new actions within the sequence or swap out some of my actions for their own ideas! Or, simply have mine ready as a backup idea, but ask the kids for ideas of what action to use.
- Hand out one cup to each child and have them complete the pattern with a partner!

I recruited my 7 year old to help me demonstrate the actions! I showed him the actions just once and then was prompting him what would come next (just like I would be as a music leader!) while holding the camera. He did great for no practice!

Also note, I did scrap the crown for king that he shows in the video, but you can certainly include it if you’d like. I just decided to simplify the pattern a bit and it didn’t look as much like a crown as we had hoped! 🙂
