St. Patrick’s Day: Pot of Gold Bean Bag Toss

I’m so excited to use this activity in singing time! I love finding simple ways to make primary fun. All you need for this activity is a set of bean bags and our printable four-leaf clovers and pot of gold!

You can find bean bags in a variety of different places. If you can’t find some at Walmart or your local dollar store, you can grab this set of 12 cornhole bean bags!

Start by choosing 5-8 songs you want to review. You could do songs you have learned this year or add in some songs from previous years. My primary kids always enjoy when I throw in a few wiggle songs too!

Print out 10-12 four-leaf clovers of any size. On the back of the clovers, write the names of the primary songs you want to review. You can also grab these printable clovers from our St. Patrick’s Day Hidden Clovers Game!

Before primary, set up your bean bag toss by setting the “pot of gold” at the front of the room. You can use an actual bucket or just tape the pot of gold picture to the floor. Set up 10-12 clovers around the pot of gold. Make sure you have a set of bean bags or even just something small to toss.

At the beginning of primary, have the kids look at your set up and guess what holiday it is! Once they guess St. Patrick’s Day, explain how to play the bean bag toss!

You may want to place some tape on the floor to help the kids make sure to stay behind the line when they throw the bean bags.

Choose someone to come up and throw the first toss. If they land on the pot of gold, have a small prize or treat for them. You might grab some cute chocolate gold coins, small Dollar Story toys. You could also let them pick what song you sing next!

If they miss or land on a four-leaf clover, turn over the clover and sing the song on the back. Continue having kids take turns throwing the bean bags and practicing primary songs!

3 Extension Ideas:

This activity is so simple to adapt! If you don’t have bean bags or want to try something a little different, try using one of these extension ideas! We’d love to hear how you are using this fun singing time idea!

1. Different Ways to Sing

If you want to only focus on one song you are currently learning, write different ways to sing on the back of the clovers instead of song titles. You could have the kids sing like a leprechaun or clap on a key word! We have over 110 different ways to sing primary songs!

2. Pot of Gold Cornhole!

If you have a cornhole set, you could use this activity with cornhole! For this version, have the hole be the “pot of gold.” Tape the clovers to different spots on the cornhole board. If they land on the clovers, they get 1 point. If they land the bean bag in the hole, they get 3 points. Sing a primary song after each team’s throw.

3. Pot of Gold Basketball

Bring in a mini basketball hoop and have the kids try to make a basket in the “pot of gold!” Tape the plastic hoop to the board and have each side of the room earn points for each basket they make! Decorate the board with clovers. Every time a team makes a basket, they choose a clover with a song!
