We Thank Thee O God for a Prophet Find the Word
How to Play:
Pick your verse, I’ve included all 3 below, and then print the lyrics with blanks and keywords in color or black and white. Cut out all the keywords and then mix them up out of order. Put the lyrics posters in order up on the whiteboard and put all the keywords randomly around the sides.
Sing through We Thank Thee O God for a Prophet (flip chart available here) once, before introducing this activity.
Show the children the find the word challenge you’ve brought in today. Ask the children what do they notice? Oh, you’re right, we’re missing some of our words! Do you think you can help me find the words? Tell them to watch carefully while singing for the correct words for each blank.
Do the first one together. Hum the first line of the song, “We thank thee O God…”, this first one is easy! Who know what word we are missing there? Hint: It’s in the title of the song!
Sing through the song and have the kids pay attention to a word to fill into the blank. Have a helper come up and pick a word and add it to the missing spot. Sing through the song to check if they were right!
Continue making your way through the song adding 1-2 keywords and checking for accuracy to build in lots of repetition with purpose.
6 More Fun Ways to Play this We Thank Thee O God for a Prophet Find the Word Activity!
Sensory Bin: Fill a plastic tote with a sensory object such as dry beans, rice, noodles, kinetic sand, or whatever else you have around the home. Cut out and laminate the keywords. Hide them in the sensory bin and let the kids dig to find and uncover the words! Make a connection that we must seek out the Prophet’s words and actively trying to obey!
*You can tape the words to the bottom of the bucket and have them move the items around until they can find and read each word!
General Conference Topics: Use the conference topics instead of the lyrics for a fun General Conference twist, or if your kids already know the lyrics, or if you’re not focused on memorizing the words and want this activity to be more of an object lesson on what we can learn from the Prophets!
Keyword Order: Print only the keywords (not all the lyrics with the blanks) and have the Primary children arrange the keywords in the correct order. It will take them at least a few times through the verse to arrange, check, and double check that they have the correct order!
Lyrics vs Keyword: Split the room into two groups. Have one side sing only the keywords and the other side sing the rest of the lyrics. Then swap. Which side can sing out their part the best? (A little competition goes a LONG way!!)
Keyword Verse Match: Print out the verse title pages for any verses you are teaching (page 2, 15, 28). Then, print out the keywords. Scramble them up and have them sort them into the correct verse!
Lyrics Order: Have the children put the lyrics pages with blanks in the correct order!
