3 Ways to Use Paper Plates American Flag in Primary

With just a few supplies for less than $5, you can create a really engaging 4th of July activity for your primary kiddos! Along with some cheap paper plates, I also bought some large permanent markers. Most of the ideas below include some kind of writing, so I wanted to have some good markers on hand!

There are lots of different ways to use this simple activity in singing time! Here are just 3 ways to use these festive paper plates in primary!

1. Paper Plates Song Titles & Ways to Sing

Before primary, assemble your paper plates American Flag on the board. Write a song title or a way to sing on the back of each plate! For ways to sing ideas, head over to this post with 110 Fun Ways to Sing a Primary Song!

If your goal is to review lots of different songs, you may choose to write only song titles on the back of the plates. If you want to just focus on reviewing one or two songs, write silly ways to sing!

Some Ways to Sing:

  • Stand on your tip-toes
  • Sing like a pirate
  • Sing with a microphone in your hand
  • Teachers VS Kids
  • Pat your knees
  • Lasso like a cowboy

2. Red, White, and Blue Actions

You could also simply number the plates and post them randomly on the board. Let the kids pick a number which matches a song on a prepared list so your pianist is ready! You can also let them add a fun way to sing or have 3 styles ready one for each red, white and blue, such as:

  • Red – March in Place
  • White – Clap on each word
  • Blue  Stand at attention, then jump on a specific keyword!

3. Assemble the Flag

Assemble the American Flag together in primary! You could set it up like a puzzle, where the paper plates are hidden around the room. Sing or listen to a song while the kids find all the paper plates. Then, have them work together to use all the plates to create a flag. The tricky part will be figuring out how to make the white stripes (see my note above).

Each time a few plates are added to the flag, sing through your song. Once the entire flag is on the board, review your song one more time!

Extension Ideas:

  • Play a fun game of “Hot and Cold” with one of the patriotic stars. Have a child go in the hallway and wait with a teacher while the rest of the class hides the star. When they come back in, help them find the star by singing louder as they get closer and closer to the star!
  • Come prepared with some U.S. trivia! Write trivia questions on the back of each star. After singing through a verse, have a child choose a star and answer a trivia question. If they don’t know the answer, they can get some help from their classmates!
  • Play a game of memory! Tape a picture to the back of each star. Each star has match! Arrange the stars into a 3×5 board and have the children turn over the stars until they find a match! Find more details about how to play “Memory” in primary in this post here!
