On a Golden Springtime Color Code

If you’ve never used a color code in primary, the basic idea behind this activity is to swap out key words in the song with colors! During singing time, you’ll have to figure out what each color represents and solve the code!

If you want to create your own color code for any primary sing, just start by looking for any words that appear often in the song. You can also look for different types of words, like descriptive words or action words. Then, assign each word or word type to a color!

I’ve created a color code with 4 colors to represent different words or types of words in the song. Be sure to print all pages of the color code, as well as the key before singing time!

How to Play:

Before introducing this activity, start by reviewing the first verse of On a Golden Springtime with this flip chart.

Then, ask the children if they are up for a challenge. Post the first page or two of the color code. Hmm, that’s weird. What do all these colors mean? Let’s see if we can find any patterns.

One way to do this activity is to start with one color at a time. You’ll notice that the color red comes up quite a few times in the code. In our color code, red will represent any word that refers to light, like “golden, “bright,” or “light.”

Sing through the song again and follow along carefully to see if you can figure out what “red” stands for! After you solve for one color, choose another color.

Another way to play is to fill in all the missing words first, and then look for similarities between each group of words. For example, what do the words, “underneath,” “upward,” and “down” have in common? They tell us a direction!

Continue until you figure out what all 4 colors in the puzzle stand for. This is an excellent way to get in lots of repetition while keeping everyone engaged!

Color Code:

*Note: I updated the colors after taking pictures. 🙂

  • Yellow = “Light” Words (sun, bright, light)
  • Green = Seed/Seedling
  • Blue = Action Words
  • Orange = Directional Words (upward, underneath, down)

Extension Activities:

  • Pair each color with an action word! Start with one color/action at a time, or try singing through using all the actions! Here is an example of actions you might choose: Blue = Jump, Yellow = Clap, Orange = Spin, Green = Toe touch, Purple = Stand and Sit
  • Hum or stay silent each time you get to a colored word. Alternatively, choose a silly voice to sing only on these key words!
  • Assign each class 1 color. Have each class sing words with their color plus all the normal words. Sing your words extra loud! Then, switch to a new color as you repeat the verse!
  • To simplify this activity, pair an older primary class with a younger class and have each group work together to solve for 1-2 colors. This is a great way to get your younger primary kids involved too!
