On a Golden Springtime Pitch Leading

Using a pitch leading chart can be a perfect teaching tool for a song that is unfamiliar to your primary children! Your visual learners will especially appreciate having a visual representation of the melody to follow along with.

This pitch leading activity can be used for any of the three verses of this song. However, I recommend just choosing one verse to focus on. Then, try to incorporate a different learning style to review additional verses!

If you are using this tool to introduce this song in primary, begin by taping the pitch leading chart on the board. What do all these lines mean? Do the colors give us any clues?

Then, hold your hand out flat with your palm facing the floor. Sing the first line of the song, moving your palm up or down with the pitch. If a pitch repeats, move your hand slightly forward to indicate a new note on the same pitch.

What am I doing with my hand? What do you notice about the lines on the board? That’s right! My hand is moving with the music. When we sing down low like this, my hand is low. When we sing up high like this, my hand goes up!

Now we’re ready to start learning the song! If this is your first time singing through the song, point to the pitches on the board as you sing. Or, sing through the song using your hand to follow the pitches.

You may find that a “call and response” works really well here. Sing one line, then have the children repeat after you. Breaking down the song into little chunks will make it much easier to learn!

You’ll notice in the printable below that each page is split in half. When you reach the end of a line, you’ll want to move to the second half of the page to find the next pitch.

If you are using this activity to review the song, have the children try pitch leading with you since they are already familiar with the melody. Have all the children hold out one hand to move up and down with the melody.

If you haven’t already, sing through the entire song without stopping. Could you follow the melody the entire time? Awesome job!

Extension Activities:

  • Divide up the pitch leading posters between classes. Have each class stand and sing when it’s their turn!
  • Choose a volunteer to come up and be the leader! Have the child use the pitch leading posters and their hand to lead the group. Then, have them choose the next leader!
  • Some words have a special color! Choose a few volunteers or classes to sing one color while the rest of the group sings all the other pitches. For example, choose 1-2 children to sing all the words that reference “light!”
  • Turn over one page of the pitch leading chart each time you repeat the song. Can you remember the melody without the hints?
