Keep things simple this week and solve a musical word search in singing time! This word representations idea (archives) is a great way to focus on the lyrics of this pioneer song!

At the beginning of singing time, start by singing through To Be a Pioneer (flip chart here!). This word search uses key words from both the first and the second verses of this pioneer song.

After a brief review of the lyrics, post the word search and word bank on the board. Do these words look familiar to anyone? They can all be found in our song!

Let’s see if we can find all the words before singing time is over! Sing through the song again to give the children some time to look for the key words in the puzzle. The words can be vertical, horizontal, or diagonal!

By the time the song is finished, I’m sure you’ll have some eager hands raised to mark off some words in the puzzle. Choose a few kids to come cross off a few words, then sing through the song again as you keep looking!

Did we find them all? If there are any tricky ones, offer a few small hints while the kids search for all the key words. Continue taking turns crossing off words in the word search until you have found them all!

Once you’ve solved the word search puzzle, finish by singing through the song once more and sharing a brief testimony.

Extension Activities:

• Pick a fun action to do each time you sing a key word from the word search. Here are some ideas for simple actions: Clap, stomp, run in place, touch your toes, kick, air punch, high five a friend, wave arms, stand/sit.
• Give each class a copy of the word search. Have each group work together to solve the puzzle. You can even make it a race!
• Hum instead of sing each key word in the song! Or, just stay silent!
• Use this word search as an intro activity and solve the entire word search together. Then, see if the kids can guess what song you’ll be learning!
• Look for the words in the order that they appear in the song! Start with the word, “Handcart” and continue looking for each word as you move through the song.
