What’s Changed from the
New Testament 2023 Song List?
Here’s a great overview to help you analyze what was the same from the last year we taught the New Testament and what’s new. You’ll notice some brand new songs we’ve never had on a suggested list before along with some favorites that are no longer on the suggested song list.
1. Back to 3 Suggested Songs!
The previous format always included 3 suggested songs. This tradition started shifting away beginning in 2024 with the Book of Mormon year with some months only featuring 2 songs. 2025 D&C year and 2026 Old Testament year only featured 2 suggested songs. The last time we had a list of 3 recommended songs for each month was the last time we taught the New Testament!
Looking at the list of songs included, with so many NEW hymns included (more on that below), I suspect we may continue to see 3 suggested songs moving forward.
2. New Songs Added!
The newly updated Old Testament Come Follow Me Song list, updated for 2026 year, now includes these songs that were not included in the previous 2022 year’s list!

3. Some Songs Removed
Some of the songs, that were previously included in the 2022 Old Testament Song list, are no longer recommended songs. I’m sad to lose a few of these as suggested songs as I think they fit the year so well!

4. LOTS of NEW Hymns this Year!
It’s fun to see so many of the NEW songs that have been released in batches as we await the full release of the new Hymn Book being included in this year’s suggested song list.
We have 11 NEW hymns included:

- Holding Hands Around the World (1011)
- Standing on the Promises (1023)
- I Have Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ (1024)

To compare to last year’s list, during the 2026 Old Testament year we had just 2 NEW songs included – Gethsemane and Holy Places.
Can I Include Other Songs?
Yes, you can select and include other songs, keeping in mind that these songs were prepared and selected by the Church Education Board with much study and consideration. They were selected to correlate with the doctrines taught each month. Here’s the instructions included on using the church provided suggested song list:
From the Instructions for Singing Time:
The Primary presidency and music leader select songs for each month to reinforce principles the children are learning in their classes and at home. A list of songs that reinforce these principles is included below.
As you teach songs to the children, invite them to share what they have already learned about the stories and doctrinal principles that the songs teach. Invite the children to share their thoughts and feelings about the truths found in the songs.
The Children’s Songbook is the basic resource for music in Primary. Hymns from the hymnbook and songs from the Friend are also appropriate. You can also use songs from Hymns—For Home and Church. The use of any other music in Primary must be approved by the bishopric (see General Handbook: Serving in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 12.3.4, Gospel Library).

I’ll be sharing teaching ideas for all of the 36 songs included on the 2027 New Testament Primary Song list this year. I already have complete resources for 22 of these songs already and will be adding them into the membership. We will be working on all of the new songs through the end of the year and adding them as we go along! Most of the teaching resources will be ready by early 2027 to give you tons of flexibility in teaching the songs as your own pace and in your own order!

You’ll find a free printable list of the suggested songs for 2027 Come Follow Me New Testament year included below! I recommend you print 2-3 copies! Keep one on the back of your Singing Time Binder, use one for scribbling all over to pick your songs, mark off how well the kids are learning them so far, and any other planning!
