Have some fun teaching the new Old Testament song, The Creation (archives) using these rebus puzzle pictures. Decode each picture puzzle for a fun way to introduce the lyrics or put your song knowledge to the test!
The Creation Rebus Puzzles
When I taught singing time a few years back, I tried to find ways to utilize the same plan for both Junior and Senior primary. That’s why I especially love this rebus puzzle idea!
Junior primary children will enjoy the visual element of these puzzles, while Senior primary children will appreciate the opportunity to show how smart they are!
For this logical conclusions activity, I’ve created puzzles using primarily symbols and pictures to represent each line of the song. A few of the puzzles have some word play, but most are simply drawings!
Here’s an example. In the picture below, there are several typed words, with the word “Wondrous” in large text. Did you read any of the words? Or did you just focus on the large text. This puzzle is a play on the line, “We READ these WONDROUS words.”
As you introduce or review this song together, decode each picture! Can you figure out which line of the song matches each puzzle below?
Introduction Activity:
We’re going to learn a brand-new song today! I brought some pictures to help us. Can anyone tell me what they see in this picture? The #1? A book? The word, “Verse?” The first line of this song goes, “In the first verse of the Bible.”
Let’s look at the next picture. There are so many words! Can someone tell me which word is the biggest? “We read these wondrous words.”
Continue introducing the verse one line at a time. This song teaches us about some of the wonderful things Heavenly Father created. Let’s see if we can guess what some of those things are.
Show the first pictures for the chorus and take a few guesses for what the pictures might represent. Yes! Heavenly Father made night and day! What else did He create?
I love that this activity provides an opportunity to teach the song in very small chunks. Teaching in this way makes it so much more doable for the kids! As they continue learning this song, they may even recall these visuals to remember the words.
Review Activity:
If you’ve already begun teaching this song, this activity can make for a great review idea! Sing through the lyrics once for a quick review. Make sure to grab a copy of our flip chart for this song if you don’t already have it! You’ll definitely want the lyrics handy for this activity.
Then, tape up a few of the rebus picture puzzles. What do these pictures represent? Give the children a minute to glance at the pictures and see if anyone has a guess. Yes! All these pictures represent different parts of our song!
Have the children take turns coming up to solve one puzzle at a time. Sing through the song intermittently to get in lots of song practice!
Extension Activities:
- Cut out the rebus puzzle pages in half and mix them up on the board. Can you put all the phrases in the correct order?
- For a fun review idea, divide the rebus puzzles amongst each class. Have each class work together to solve for their song phrase. Then, listen for their phrases and take turns singing.
- Tape the picture puzzles underneath the chairs ahead of time. At the beginning of singing time, have each child look under their seat and see if they can solve their puzzle.
- Choose a few picture cards to turn over at a time. Can you remember the lyrics without the picture?
