Día De Los Muertos is all about remembering our deceased ancestors and it can be a great way to talk about the temple, family history work, eternal families, or the plan of salvation!
In this fun Día De Los Muertos Papel Picado activity, you’ll use these cute paper banner pages inspired by authentic traditional banners.
Día De Los Muertos Papel Picado
I suggest printing the papel picado banners out on cardstock so they can be easily reused and they will be sturdier as well. You can print the black and white version on a colorful paper to save on ink.
Start with the Día de los Muertos Papel Picado Banner pages up on the white board. Write a song title of your choice beneath the banner.
Invite a child to come up and pick out one of the banner cards. Remove it from the board to reveal the song selection. If you’re including songs the kids don’t know very well, you can use flip charts or consider breaking up different verses as their own song written on the board.
Continue to make your way through your list of songs and picking out which banner to pick next!

Extension Activities:
- Print two copies of each of the papel picado banners. Play a traditional game of match! They’ll pick any two pages to flip over until they find a match. Then, have a pre-selected song list to go with each of the 8 designs.
- Pick 3-4 of the papel picado banners. Write on the lyrics to your choice of song up on the board switching between dry erase markers that match the colors of your selected signs. Let the kids pick one of the 4 designs. Sing ONLY the words that match the colors of that sign! This will be a fun and tricky challenge!
- Select just one or two songs to review. Write a fun themed way to sing under each poster instead! Let them pick a banner card to use that fun themed way to sing.
