What’s Changed Since D&C 2021’s List?

There was a huge shift in the song list this year, and I’ve noticed a couple of major shifts that I’d like to share. I’ll break them down by each point for easier scanning, if you’re in a hurry, but there’s lots of interesting notes scattered in below from analyzing the previous lists.

1. 2 Suggested Songs Per Month:

Since the change to the Come, Follow Me curriculum in 2019 which began with teaching the New Testament, the recommended song list published by the church had included 3 different song selections for each month.

We saw a limited shift in that approach with the 2023 Book of Mormon suggested list which included 4 months that only had 2 suggested songs.

Now, this year, the list has been simplified even further – there are only 2 songs suggested for each month of the year.

It is an interesting change to go from only one suggested song per month under the older curriculum prior to the release of Come, Follow Me, to an increase of variety and options with 3 different song selections, to now be simplifying the list a little with just two monthly song picks.

2. Repeated Songs

The song list in the past have included several songs that repeated as a suggested for different months of the year. This was first eliminated with the 2024 Book of Mormon song list, but that helped to account for the removal of 3 monthly songs.

This new format does not have a single song repeating across the list. This means, while the list appears to have decreased significantly in your overall song selections available, the actual number of song titles has only decreased marginally.

The 2021 Doctrine & Covenants song list had 6 songs that repeated:

  • Family History-I Am Doing it (January & November)
  • I Want to Be a Missionary Now (February & April)
  • The Priesthood is Restored (February & August)
  • When He Comes Again (March & May)
  • The Church of Jesus Christ (March & October)
  • Have I Done Any Good? (May & July)

This means, the 2025 song list is down to 24 songs from the 30 songs featured in 2021.

3. New Songs Added!

The newly updated D&C Come Follow Me Song list, updated for 2025 year, now includes these songs that were not included in the previous 2021 year’s list!

Repeated on Other Song Year’s Lists:

  • When I Am Baptized (Book of Mormon 2024, New Testament 2023)
  • Did Jesus Really Live Again (Old Testament 2022)
  • “Give,” Said the Little Stream (Old Testament 2022)
  • Stand for the Right (New Testament 2023, Book of Mormon 2020 but not in 2024)

Not Previously a Suggested Song!

  • Every Star is Different (#142)

4. Some Songs Removed

Some of the songs, that were previously included in the 2021 D&C Song list, are no longer recommended songs. I’m sad to lose a few of these as suggested songs as I think they fit the year so well! I’ve broken these down into two sections, since there are so many removed, with first songs that were not featured in any of the other year’s suggested song lists and then a separate section for the songs we have seen duplicated across other years, so they may have been taught to your Primary in the last few years.

Not Previously Included Other Year’s:

  • Joseph Smith’s First Prayer (Hymn #26)
  • The Priesthood is Restored (#89)
  • I Stand All Amazed (Hymn #193)
  • The Spirit of God (Hymn #2)
  • Praise to the Man (Hymn #27)
  • Jesus Said Love Everyone (#61)
  • Reverence is Love (#31)
  • Hark! The Herald Angels Sing (Hymn #209)

Might Show Up Again in a Different Year:

  • Jesus Has Risen – Included in the 2023 New Testament Year
  • Have I Done Any Good? – Included in the 2024 Book of Mormon Year
  • Choose the Right – Included in the 2024 Book of Mormon and 2022 Old Testament Years
  • Help Me, Dear Father – Included in the 2024 Book of Mormon and 2022 Old Testament Years
  • I Know That My Redeemer Lives – Included in the 2023 New Testament Year
  • Families Can Be Together Forever – Included in 2022, 2023, and 2024.
  • I Will Follow God’s Plan – Included in the 2023 New Testament Year
  • I Will Be Valiant – Included in the 2022 Old Testament Year

5. Not as Many Hymns Featured

This year’s list is surprisingly lacking in Hymn selections. There is only one hymn featured on the 2025 Doctrine & Covenants song list – and it’s a Christmas selection: O Little Town of Bethlehem.

The song lists have traditionally included several hymn selections and the new songbook in progress will be a combined collection of both hymns and children’s songs that can be sung by either audience, so I’m a little surprised to not see many hymns included this upcoming year. For a little perspective, this is the hymn count from previous years:

  • 2024 Book of Mormon: 7 Hymns – The Iron Rod, Choose the Right, Have I Done Any Good?, Testimony, As I Search the Holy Scriptures, Home Can Be a Heaven on Earth, and I Believe in Christ.
  • 2023 New Testament: 3 Hymns – Come Follow Me, Behold the Great Redeemer Die, and I Know That My Redeemer Lives
  • 2022 Old Testament: 3 Hymns – Choose the Right, My Redeemer Lives, We Thank Thee O God for a Prophet
  • 2021 Doctrine & Covenants: 7 Hymns – Joseph Smith’s First Prayer, I Stand All Amazed, Have I Done Any Good?, I Know That My Redeemer Lives, The Spirit of God, Praise to the Man, and Hark! The Herald Angels Sing.

You’ll notice, we are going from a hymn-heavy list in 2021 and in 2024 to no hymns on the suggested list for the Primary Program Presentation’s list.

Can I Include Other Songs?

Yes, you can select and include other songs, keeping in mind that these songs were prepared and selected by the Church Education Board with much study and consideration. They were selected to correlate with the doctrines taught each month. Here’s the instructions included on using the church provided suggested song list:

From the Instructions for Singing Time:

The Primary presidency and music leader select songs for each month to reinforce principles the children are learning in their classes and at home. A list of songs that reinforce these principles is included in this guide.

As you teach songs to the children, invite them to share what they have already learned about the stories and doctrinal principles the songs teach. Invite the children to share their thoughts and feelings about the truths found in the songs.

The Children’s Songbook is the basic resource for music in Primary. Hymns from the hymnbook and songs from the Friend are also appropriate. The use of any other music in Primary must be approved by the bishopric (see General Handbook, 12.3.4).
