Doctrine & Covenants Reading Chart Bookmark
To help you track your reading throughout the year, print out a D&C reading chart and slip the bookmark into your scriptures! This bookmark is setup with all of the Come Follow Me readings per month listed and a new color to help distinguish each month.
The D&C is a short book of scriptures to study, but it also includes the proclamations and the articles of faith. Another new feature this year is a new section called Voices of the Restoration with stories that you can study alongside the sections for your readings.
That was one of my favorite parts of studying the Old Testament was the focus on stories. With stories the scriptures feel easier to connect with on a personal level and apply to your life. I love that this year will add in stories and help us better relate to what was happening during the restoration of the gospel.
I recommend printing bookmarks for your class and encouraging youth and families to do their best to read through the D&C in its entirety this year!
How to Read the D&C in a Year!
The Doctrine & Covenants is just 295 pages. That means you just need to read .8 pages a day. That’s less than 1 page! Here’s a helpful reading chart breakdown guide to help encourage you to make the commitment!
Read the D&C in 90 Days:
- 3.3 pages per day
- 23 pages per week
- 11 sections each week
- 98 pages per month
Read the D&C in a Year:
- .8 pages per day
- 6 pages per week
- 3 sections per week
- 25 pages per month
- 11.5 sections per month
- 74 pages per quarter
Tips to Help with Reading the D&C This Year!
1. Make a Commitment
The best motivation you can find is making a personal commitment. Set a goal and write a date on the back of the bookmark on when you will finish the Doctrine & Covenants by. That could be the end of the year or any other specific date.
For some, it may be helpful to set shorter goals such as:
- Joseph Smith History & Sections 1-15 by March 1
- Sections 16-40 by May 1
- Sections 41-70 by July 1
- Sections 71-95 by September 1
- Sections 96-125 by November 1
- Sections 126-138 and Proclamations by December 31
You may also benefit by sharing your goal with a friend or loved one. Let them know your goal and update them occasionally. This will help keep accountability and encourage them as well in their own reading goals!
2. Habit Pairing
To help build a new habit, if you don’t already have a habit and schedule of reading your scriptures, is to pair your new habit with an existing habit. For example, if you’re already in the habit of brushing your teeth every morning you can pair your scripture reading with brushing your teeth. Play the audio version while you brush or read your scriptures just before brushing your teeth.
3. Swap an App Habit
Do you find yourself spending more time than you’d like with apps like Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, or a favorite gaming app? Put the Gospel Library as an icon on your phone desktop right next to the app you’d like to swap. Whenever you would naturally think to check in or use that app, you’ll notice the scriptures.
Make a goal to read the scriptures first – it shouldn’t take you more than 5 minutes to read .8 of a page! Then, you can move on to your app you were contemplating or you might just be motivated to continue on to something else productive instead!
