You’ll have so much fun teaching Hark! The Herald Angels Sing Dramatic Leading activity during Singing Time! Just add these fun big motions as you pretend to lead the music just like a music leader would as you sing through the song with lots of repetition.
I enjoy teaching Hark! The Herald Angels Sing (archives) and other classic Christmas Hymns in Primary because they are songs the children are already somewhat familiar with and will help them recognize the music that is also sung during Sacrament meeting.

Hark! The Herald Angels Sing Dramatic Leading
Sing through Hark! The Herald Angels Sing once, before you add in this fun extra activity. I love to sing through the song a single time first with the Hark! The Herald Angels Sing flip chart to help remind the children of the words for those that may need it.
Introduce the first two dramatic leading moves for the first two lines of the song. Draw a music note in the air as you sing “Hark! The herald angels sing” then draw a crown as you sing “Glory to the newborn king.”

Have the children try out the dramatic leading motions with you as you sing the first two lines of the song together. Great job! You guys got that down so great! For this activity, we are pretending to be a music conductor, but with fun and dramatic leading actions that match the song lyrics. Let’s repeat those two actions through the whole song.
Post the pattern chart up on the board. Invite the children to follow your lead (and point to the actions as you move through the song).

Praise how well the kid did at keeping up and following along!
Invite 2-3 children (or 1 primary class) to come up front and help you lead the actions as you sing through the song again. Keep rotating through new helpers and repeat singing for lots of repetition and practice leading the song.

Extension Activities:
- Use the extended dramatic leading actions to lead through the song with different actions for each of line of the song!
- Switch it up to teaching the 2nd verse or working your way through the whole song based on which verses you’re planning to teach to your Primary children.
- Scramble up the dramatic leading action cards and let the children pick 2 to try. Switch actions every other line through the song. Then, switch to new actions or add on 2 additional actions and work your way through 4 actions, then repeat.
- Try singing the song and leading with the dramatic actions on double speed!
- Play 4 corners with dramatic leading actions! Put the leading action cards around the room. Have the kids pick a wall to start at, then walk from one to the next with each line of the song they sing as they switch actions as they go.
