I Pray in Faith What Comes Next?

I love that this song teaches simple steps of prayer to guide children in their efforts to communicate with Heavenly Father. For a fun way to review, have the kids put the steps in the correct order as you sing!

I’ve created lyric strips for each line of this song to make your prep even easier!This particular activity focuses more on the second verse, but I’ve included lyric strips for both verses so that you can choose which verse to practice. Just print and cut each line into word strips before primary.

Start by singing through I Pray in Faith (flip chart) once before introducing this activity. I find that starting with music helps invite the Spirit and provides a great refresh for the song.

Then, arrange the words strips randomly on the board. I recommend keeping each verse separate for this activity. Otherwise, there may be some confusion, since the first verse includes some steps of prayer as well.

If you are starting with the first verse, ask for a volunteer to come up and find the first line of the song. Continue putting the lyric strips in order until you have them all correct!

If you are focusing specifically on the second verse, invite the children to think about their own prayers. How do we usually begin our prayers?

That’s right – we start by addressing Heavenly Father. Choose a volunteer to come up and place the first line on the far left of the board.

Then, choose another volunteer to come up and choose the next line. After we address Heavenly Father, we want to express our gratitude for our blessings. This line goes next on the board.

Play and sing the verse up to this point. Hmm, what comes next? We can humbly ask Heavenly Father for blessings, comfort, guidance, or anything else that we want to speak with Him about. Who can find the next line of the song?

What is the last step in prayer? We close our prayers, “in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.” We do this because Jesus Christ is our advocate and mediator with Heavenly Father.

Once you have all the prayer steps are in the correct order on the board, sing through the song again and share your testimony of prayer.

Extension Activities:

• Play a fun game of 4 corners. Tape on prayer step in each corner of the room. Have the children randomly choose one corner to stand in. Then, have them sing their assigned line. After you finish, have the kids move to another corner and sing again!
• Write a scripture or conference talk that correlates with each prayer step on the back of each word strip. As you get to each step, read the scripture/talk.
• Try a simple call and response game – sing one line of the song acapella and see if the children can sing back the next line of the song. This is a great option for younger primary children who know the lyrics but don’t read yet!
• Have the kids help draw simple symbols for each step of prayer next to the word strips. Or, draw symbols beforehand and see if the children can correctly match each picture to the correct line.
• Print out a set of word strips for each class and place the word strips in an envelope. Race to see which class can rearrange the steps in the correct order first!
