I cannot wait to use this singing time activity with my Primary kiddos! They love this type of question and answer format and learning about history, and this is just the perfect activity to help you teach Jesus Once Was a Little Child (archives)!
In this Jesus Once Was a Little Child Guest Visitor activity, you’ll invite a visiting child or adult to come into your Primary room dressed as a visitor from the 1st century BC! They will answer questions about what life would have been like for Jesus as he was growing up about the culture, religion, and daily life.

Jesus Once Was a Little Child Guest Visitor
Prep Before Singing Time:
Invite and prepare a guest to come join you in Primary. I would recommend inviting a young looking Young Man or Young Woman from your ward or a neighboring ward. Consider someone who loves to do a little acting! Invite them to visit as a friend of Jesus from his childhood (or simply a child from that time period if you prefer to be less specific). You could also utilize a missionary or another person from your ward and invite them as an adult friend of the family.

Give them the prepared intro and questions & answers so they can read through these and prepare to talk about their childhood. They can, of course, reference the notes as they speak, but the more they can remember the more authentic this experience will be.
Dress up your guest in linens such as a sheet, towel, sash, scarf, robe, etc to look more the part.
Put the questions you would like to include up on the board. You can use the quarter-, half-, or full-page question only format or the full page sheet with the answers – just fold each page in half and let your guest pull down the question to refer to as you go.

How to Use in Singing Time:
Sing through Jesus Once Was a Little Child (flip chart) once, before introducing your guest visitor. I love to sing through the song once as it helps to transition to a new activity and review the words before introducing a new element to focus on.
Tell the children you have a VERY special visitor today! Someone has come to visit from the 1st Century BC!

Have your guest visitor enter (or come up front). Let them introduced themselves with the short prepared greeting. It will end by opening up for the children to ask them questions.
Mention that there are some helps up on the board of questions they might want to ask! Invite a child to pick a question to ask your guest visitor. In Junior, just let them pick one of the cards. Work your way through 1-3 questions before singing through your song again. Invite the children to sing their very best for their guest!

Extension Activities:
- If you have a small Primary, you can post the questions around the room or down the hallway. Go on a “journey” with your guest visitor. Stop at each question and learn a little bit about that time period and place where Jesus would have grown up from your guest. Even better – you can add props such as a simple tablescape of foods, toys, religious texts, carpentry items, etc.
