Add some movement (master list of activities!) into singing time this week with this fun The Still Small Voice Movement Words idea! Choose key words in the song to pair with simple actions to keep your primary kids engaged while learning the song, The Still Small Voice (archives).
The Still Small Voice Movement Words
Using movement in singing time is a great way to keep wiggly primary children engaged in primary! Even something as simple as marching or tapping to the beat can get everyone out of their seats and participating.
For this activity, I’ve included some simple actions to pair with key words in this song. In the printable later in this post, you’ll find 8 colorful movement cards to use along with this activity! As you practice together, start with just a few movements or try them all!
This idea is a great one to pair with a more reverent activity, like this The Still Small Voice Feeling Cards idea. This way, you can have some fun AND have a spiritual-tie in with your singing time plan.
Before introducing this activity, start by reviewing The Still Small Voice (flip chart here).
Then, quietly start singing “Through the still small voice” while crouching down low to the ground. As you sing, “speaks to me” quickly pop up! Can you try it with me? Have the children try these actions with you while singing this line.
Today we’re going to add some movement to our song! We’ll have to listen for certain words in the song. Let’s see what words we’ll be looking for. Post the movement word cards on the board with tape or magnets.
Demonstrate each action without any music and have the kids try the movements with you. As I mentioned before, you may want to start with just a few movements and slowly add more as you repeat the song. If you want an extra challenge, try all the actions the first time through!
Are you ready to try it with the music? Have the pianist begin playing the song and follow along with the movements! Continue practicing the song while listening for your movement words.

Movement Words Outline:
I’ve included a basic breakdown of the movement words used in this song here. You’ll find that there is some repetition in the actions throughout the song. This should help make it a little bit easier to keep track of the actions!
Be sure to grab our printable movement cards to remind yourself and your primary kids of the actions!
- Still Small Voice – Crouch Down Low
- Speaks – Jump UP!
- Guide Me/Direct Me – March 2x to the Right
- Save Me/Protect Me – March 2x to the Left
- Right/Night – Clap Hands
- Listen – Spin Around!
5 Extension Activities:
- Post all the movement words on the board in the order that they appear in the song. Turn over 1-2 cards at a time and hum or stay silent on each of the movement words as you do the action.
- Randomly pass out the movement word cards to each class. Have each class ONLY do their assigned actions. For some extra fun, print out multiple copies of the movement cards and pass them out to individual children. This makes for a fun “popcorn singing” idea!
- Have the kids come up with some additional actions for words/phrases like, “whisper” “evil I may see,” “give my soul his light.”
- Fold the movement cards and place them in a jar. Each time you sing through the song, choose 1-2 cards and do just those actions! Then, pick 2 new actions to do!
- Sing movement words LOUD and stay soft while singing the rest of the lyrics. Or do the opposite!
