Are you so excited to introduce and teach This Little Light of Mine (archives) to your Primary children? This is such a sweet new song added to the new hymn collection so it’s exciting to add to teach this song that is already beloved in the Christian world, and bring in the fun repeating melody into the Primary room. In This Little Light of Mine Melody Map you’ll be able to visualize the movement of the notes and the melody as you sing through this song.

This Little Light of Mine Melody Map
Sing through This Little Light of Mine once, before introducing this activity.
Post the pages of the melody map and ask the children what they see and what the notice. This is a really unique melody map, isn’t it? Let’s sing through the song and see what we notice.

In this melody map, each of the quick notes are represented with a dot.
.- . . . . . . . —- This / lit-/ -tle / light / of / m- / i- / -ne
What might the lines represent? Let’s sing and try it out! Yes – the lines are for the notes you hold out like “mine” and “shine.”
The words repeat, but is the melody the same each time? What do you notice about how the melody changes? Do you see any spots where the melody does repeat?

Extension Activities:
- For a fun challenge, post all the melody map pages up on the board in a random order. Ask the children to help you put them back in the correct order. You’ll need to pay attention to the movement of the melody to find the correct order.
- Try changing the singing speed. Sing at a slow pace enunciating on each dot. How does this slower speed change the feeling in the song? Now, let’s try singing extra fast, can you keep up with the pace?
- Hold your hand up and lead the melody with your hand moving up and down along with the notes.
- Post the version without the lyrics and let the children write in the song lyrics.
- Add an action to coordinate with each of the 3 colors for the verses.
