When We’re Helping Song Story
Sing When We’re Helping (flip chart here) once, before reading your song story aloud.
If you have a small Primary, you might invite the children to come sit on the floor with you huddle up close for story time. Or, you can certainly share your story while the kids are still in their seats.
For this activity, you’ll share the story as animated as you can so the children will be engaged and drawn into the story.
It doesn’t have to be read perfectly and it would be best if you could try to share the pieces you can from memory, just referring back to the page after each part. This will really help the story come to life!
Ask the children if they can help you with your story. When you pause and point to them, you’ll sing one line of the song together. It will help the story come together in a fun way. Do you think you can help with that?
Share the first part of the story, then pause and point. Sing together with the kids the first line of the song.
Continue sharing the story piece by piece with the lines of the song mixed in.
Extension Activities:
- For a fun additional way to extend this activity, ask a child if they could share a short story about helping in their family. Have everyone sing the 1st or 2nd verse after each story.
- Have the children pretend like THEY have a brand new baby sibling, just like Oliver in the story. While we sing through the song, pretend to take care of your baby sibling. You might rock the baby, show them your toys, help bring the baby wipes to mom, sing them a song, or help tuck your sibling in when it’s time for bed. You can sing the first or 2nd verse or both together as they pretend act. Invite them to share what some of the ways they came up with to help.
