Incorporate some movement with this fun & easy The Covenant Marching Challenges activity! As you teach The Covenant (archives) in singing time this month, try these 5 simple marching challenges. Let’s jump right in!

The Covenant Marching Challenges
You will love this simple, low-prep marching activity! The idea behind this activity is to add some movement (more purposeful movement ideas) by marching as you sing this song.
I’ve come up with 5 simple marching challenges to try as you practice this sweet Old Testament song in singing time. All 5 of these challenges are great for both Junior and Senior primary children. Try each challenge one at a time and see if you can get through all 5 during primary!

How to Play:
Start by singing through The Covenant once before having everyone stand up. Don’t forget to grab a copy of our flip chart, as this song is likely to be brand new for your primary kiddos!
We’re going to do some marching! Begin marching a steady beat and have the kids follow you. Start singing the verse, keeping a steady beat as you sing.
Now, we’re going to see how LOUDLY and SOFTLY we can march. When I put my finger to my lips, that means we are going to march quietly. When I put my hands up like a microphone, march as loudly as you can! Ready?
For the third challenge, split the room into two groups. Point to one group at a time to indicate whose turn it is to march.

Let’s try something new. Can you march like a pirate? Let’s see who can stand on one leg the longest! Can anyone do it for the entire song? Your competitive older kids will especially love this challenge.
Challenge #5 is a slowwwww or fast march! When I wave my arms slowly, march as slowly as you can! When I wave my arms fast, march quickly!
Way to go! Which one of these challenge was your favorite? Let’s try that one more time. Working through all 5 of these marching challenge is the perfect way to get in lots of repetition while still keeping things interesting and fun for the kids.

5 Marching Challenges:
Here’s a quick break-down of 5 marching challenges to use along with this song. Take a glance at the extension ideas later in this post for even more fun ways to use these challenges!
- March to the Beat: This one will be really simple! Just march one foot at a time to the beat
- Loud/Soft March: Switch off between marching loudly and softly using hand signals, such as putting your finger to your lips for a quiet march and cupping your hands around your mouth like a megaphone for a loud march
- Right/Left March: Divide the room in half. Point to either the left or the right side to take turns marching as you sing.
- Pirate (One-Legged) March: Try to stand on one leg as you sing! Who can keep their balance the longest?!
- Slow/Fast March: Alternate between a slow and a fast march

Extension Activities:
- Cut out the marching challenges into strips and put them in a bowl. Each time you sing through the song, pick a new challenge.
- Follow the leader! Pick a volunteer to come up and begin the steady march. This will set the beat. Follow the leader and march to the beat as you sing. If they speed up the tempo, see if you can keep up the pace!
- Try a few simple actions to swap out the marches, such as clapping or patting your knees
- Tape the challenges around the room! Each time you sing, pick a “runner” to go grab a challenge poster.
- Switch things up with some instruments! Just skip the pirate challenge and try the other challenges using jingle bells, egg shakers, or rhythm sticks!
