The Creation Jingle Bells
Jingle bells are a sure way to capture the attention of both your youngest Sunbeams and your oldest Valiant children! These are some of the cheapest instrument options you can find out there. This set of 24 Jingle Bells is super affordable, and it even comes in several different color options.
If you are crafty, you can get creative and try making these DIY jingle bell bracelets! Either way, these instruments are a fun way to simply tap out the rhythm to a new song or even try a more involved pattern.
Since this song is pretty new to most of us, I wanted to focus specifically on the lyrics. For this activity, we’ll be listening and shaking along with keywords in this Old Testament primary song!
Before singing time, take a few minutes to print out the keywords posters for the first verse and chorus. Alternatively, write a list of all the creations mentioned in this song on the board.
Start by singing through The Creation (flip chart) once. This is a great way to refresh the lyrics and encourage reverence before getting out instruments.
Then, point to the keywords on the board. Who can tell me what all these things have in common? Exactly! Heavenly Father created ALL these things!
Pass out jingle bells. You can definitely opt to share with a partner, but I recommend getting enough bells for each child to have their own. Listen carefully as we sing! If you hear something that Heavenly Father created, shake your bell!
Try it slowly once, listening for creation words. Did you catch them all? Let’s try it again! If you’d like to encourage even more participation, choose a helper to come up and point to each word as it appears in the song.
That’s it! It really is so easy! This activity is a great way to get in lots of repetition while keeping things new and exciting by trying to listen for the keywords.
There is SO much room for adaptation with this activity. Keep things simple, or try something new. It’s up to you! Take a glance at our list of extension ideas later in this post to spark some ideas.
Collect all the jingle bells at the end, and share your testimony of God’s love for us. Do you have a favorite creation? Share it with your primary children! They can benefit so much from hearing about your real-life experiences of feeling Heavenly Father’s love.
Extension Activities:
- Switch things up by first shaking along with the rhythm. Help solidify the rhythm by tapping out the rhythm as you sing. You may have to slow down the tempo the first time through!
- Bring in a few more rhythm instruments to add some variety! Egg shakers, rhythm/maori sticks, and sand blocks are great options! You can even create mini “bands” and take turns with each type of instrument.
- Assign one word poster to each class and have each class take turns singing different sections of the song.
- Point to one side of the room at a time and take turns shaking on the keywords.
- Add in some movement by standing up each time you hear one of God’s creations!
- Try big, sweeping shakes for the slower section of the song – “In the first words…” Then, switch to fast shakes for the next section – “He made the…”
- Experiment with dynamics by singing all the keywords LOUDLY while whispering the rest of the lyrics.
