As I Search the Holy Scriptures Scripture Hunt
When I taught singing time, it was super important to me to help the primary children understand the gospel principles taught in our primary songs. That’s why I love spiritual connection singing time ideas. Teaching gospel principles during singing time does not need to take very long, and it can even just be as simple as sharing your testimony.
For a meaningful way to introduce or review this hymn in primary, go on a little scripture hunt in singing time! Have the primary children open their scriptures and look for their favorite scripture stories as you listen to the song!
In this post, I’ve included some of my own favorite scripture verses and provided a few different ways to use this activity. Whether you choose to have a race to find scripture verses or simply share favorite scripture stories, this activity can be a powerful way to help the message of this song stay with your primary children long after Sunday!
How to Play:
Begin by singing through the first verse of As I Search the Holy Scriptures (flipchart here) as a brief review.
Then, ask: “Who brought their scriptures today?” Invite the children to hold their scriptures high in the air. Since you will likely have at least a few kids without scriptures, have children pair in small groups of 2-3.
Be sure that at least one person in the group has a set of paper scriptures. You may want to bring an extra set or borrow from your building library.
This song is about searching the scriptures! Today, we’re going to go on a scripture hunt! I’ve included scripture references from the Old Testament, New Testament, Book of Mormon, and Doctrine & Covenants.
Call out a scripture reference and see how quickly the children can find the scripture. I’ve included simple hints if your children need one. Then, have them read the scripture aloud.
Once the children have found a verse or two, invite them to spend a minute or two looking for a favorite verse or scripture story. Have the pianist play the song while the children search their scriptures.
Invite a few children to share their favorite scripture verse or scripture story. Then, sing through the song again and share your testimony of the scriptures to close.
Quick Scripture References:
I’ve included a list of 8 scripture references that have stood out to me throughout my life. I love that scripture verses can stand out to us at different points in our lives. This is a testament to me that our Heavenly Father truly is aware of us.
Here’s a list of some verses from each of the four standard works of scriptures that you might choose to use as part of this activity. Feel free to add your own, too!
In the printable later in this post, you’ll find these scripture verses, as well as some hints for how to quickly locate these scriptures. I included scripture pages from a quad set, so it is possible that your page numbers may be different than mine.

Extension Activities:
- Tape several scripture references around the room. While the children are singing, call out a scripture reference and have the kids look around to find the scripture! Then, have them read the scripture to the class.
- Make it a friendly competition and see which class can be the quickest to find each scripture reference. Have a small prize for the group that finds the verses first.
- Share your favorite scripture story with the class! Invite a few primary teachers or leaders to share their favorite scripture verses or stories in the scriptures.
