I love the stories of faith in the Book of Mormon! Book of Mormon Stories is a January song pick for 2024 Book of Mormon year in Come Follow Me and is a great way to start off the new year!
For a fun way to review this song in primary, use this Book of Mormon Stories Directional Movement activity! This simple pattern incorporates only 3 actions and is a great way to keep even your youngest primary kiddos engaged!

Book of Mormon Stories Directional Movement
This movement activity is super simple and fun! The idea behind this activity is to have one movement for each line of the song. The reason it’s called “directional” movement is because all these movements involve shifting directions!
This movement pattern can be used for all verses of this song! Just pick a verse to review or sing the entire song. At the beginning of singing time, start by reviewing Book of Mormon Stories with this flip chart.
I’ve created a printable with large, 8×11 posters for each action in this movement pattern. You can find this printable later in the post!
Post the first page of the directional marching pattern on the board. Let’s sing the first line again! Stand up! Sing or say the first line, then start marching to the right.
Then, switch directions and start marching to the left while singing the second line of the song. Post the rest of the directional marching pattern posters. Sing line 3 while spinning in a circle.
Line 4 is the trickiest part of the pattern because it incorporates all 3 actions. While singing, “Given this land” step to the right. Then, step to the left while singing, “if they lived.” Finally, spin while singing, “righteously!”
That’s it! The pattern couldn’t be simpler. Despite its simplicity, this activity is a great way to keep your primary kiddos engaged in singing time while practicing this Come Follow Me Book of Mormon song!
You can use these directional movement activities along with this The Book of Mormon Stories Flip Chart, if the kiddos need the words still.
I’ve outlined the entire pattern below and included some additional ways to use this activity in primary! Let us know how you decide to use this activity in singing time!
Directional Movement Pattern:
Line 1: March to the Right
The first action in this pattern is simple! Just stand up and march your feet while moving to the right. You can either face the front of the classroom and march or turn your entire body to the right and march forward.
*Use this action while singing, “Book of Mormon stories that my teacher tells to me.”
Line 2: March to the Left
Once you get to the second line of the song, switch directions and keep marching! You can either turn to the left and march forward or face the front and march to the left.
*Use this action while singing, “Are about the Lamanites in ancient history.”
Line 3: Spin in a Circle
You might get dizzy with this one! Simply turn or spin in a circle. Spin slowly so that you can spin for the entire line without falling over!
*Use this action while singing, “Long ago our fathers came from far across the sea”
Line 4: Step Right, Step Left, Quick Spin
Line 4 incorporates all 3 actions in the pattern! I’ve broken down the line below with each switch indicated with a slash (/) mark. Simply step to the right, step to the left, then stop and spin!
*Use this action while singing, “Given this land / if they lived / righteously.”
Extension Activities:
- Use this activity for a fun version of “4 Corners!” Post one pattern poster in each corner of the room. Assign a few kids to each corner. Starting with the first line, have the kids in each corner sing their part. Then, rotate until everyone has had a chance to sing each part!
- Switch up the order of the actions! Each of these actions can work great with any line of the song. Rearrange the posters and try a new pattern!
- What other actions can you think of? Swap one of the actions for some snaps, toe taps, jumping jacks, or slides.
