The Iron Rod Pass the Rod Singing Time
How to Play:
Sing through The Iron Rod (flip chart here) once, before beginning this activity. This will help the children sing the song without any added pressure or expectations as they review the words and transition from any other activities.
Now, pull out your fancy iron rod! You can use a real iron rod (aim for 12”) from the hardware store or just print out an Iron Rod and laminate it.
Tell the children that they will pass the iron rod from person to person going down the row until the last child who will reverse the direction and send it back towards the starting player.
If the music pauses while you are holding the iron rod, you will sing or say the next word of the song. If the child needs help, they can ask a friend in their row. Then, resume the music and everyone starts together on that word and continues passing the iron rod.
This activity is really fun for helping the children review the song once you’ve spent 2-3 weeks working on it as you’ll get in tons of singing repetition with a no-fuss game.
Extension Activities:
- Rearrange the chairs to sit in a circle and pass the iron rod around and around the loop! Can you pass increasingly quickly while the music slowly speeds up as you sing? To up the challenge, continue going faster until a word is missed then start slowly again.
- Use small groups, instead of the whole Primary room, to increase involvement. You might divide your Primary room in half or pass out one iron rod per class and send it zipping back and forth between just a single row. When the music pauses, everyone holding an Iron rod has to try to say the word together at the same time – or have the entire Primary shout out the next word!
- Have everyone pat both hands on their lap between their turns to add to create a rhythm and add a little intensity to the challenge. Just keep a steady beat with the ¾ time signature.
- When the music stops, instead ask the child one way they can “hold to the rod” and add their answers up on the board.
