How to Play:
Sing through Family History-I Am Doing It (flip chart here) once, before you pull out this activity. This is a great way to transition from another activity or begin singing time before using an interactive activity like this one!
Now, post the 4 pages of the melody map up on the board.
Ask the children what they notice in the melody map. They might point out things such as:
- There’s a thick black line that goes up and down
- There’s a backward purple arrow
- There are smiley faces
- The lines go up and down like a roller coaster
Pick one of their comments to focus on. Let’s sing through the song again and see what we can learn! Was the theory correct? What did each of the symbols represent? Continue to sing through the song as you decode the melody map.
Extension Activities:
- Have the Primary children help you arrange the melody map pages in the correct order! Just place them off to one far side of the board. Sing through the song or the first line of the song. Have the children try to figure out which page is first!
- Have the children hold their hand out horizontally. Invite them to raise and lower their hand like it’s moving up and down a roller coaster (or riding a big wave!) as the music moves up and down along with the notes.
- Invite the children to sing louder as the notes go higher and quieter as the notes fall lower. This is a great way to try out new dynamics they may not have had any experiences with before.
- Invite your pianist to not join you for one line (one page) of the song. Challenge the kids to see how well they can do following the melody map to stay on tune while singing acapella! It will be a fun challenge and changes the feeling in the room.
