I absolutely love Carrie Yost’s new primary song, God Called it Good! I am certain that your primary children will quickly come to adore it as well. However, it can sometimes be a challenge to teach a primary song that is not included in the Primary Songbook because these songs are typically longer.

We’re here to help! If your primary children are having trouble remembering all the lyrics to this song, take a break and just focus on the chorus this week!

I’ve created this crossword puzzle with 8 keywords from the chorus of this sweet primary song. Work through one clue at a time for a fun way to challenge your older primary children!

This representation of words activity is geared a bit more toward readers, but there are definitely ways to adapt this activity and find ways to include younger primary kiddos as well. Let’s jump right in and I’ll share all my tips & tricks for using this type of activity in your primary room!

Start by singing through God Called it Good (flip chart here). I definitely recommend grabbing our flip chart for this song to help you follow along with the lyrics.

Then, tape the crossword puzzle to the board. Today I have a fun challenge for you – a crossword puzzle! We’ll use clues to figure out each word in the puzzle.

Read the first clue – “Not day, but _____.” Hmm, raise your hand if you think you know the answer. That’s right – Night! Write in each letter of the word or pick a helper to come write it in.

I like to get in lots of singing, so I recommend singing through at least the chorus every few clues. This is a simple way to get in lots of repetition.

Solve for all the “ACROSS” words, then move on to the vertical words. Does anyone notice a pattern? All these words come from our song! Continue choosing helpers to come up and fill in each word. If you need an extra hint, try singing through the song phrase with that word.

Once you have finished the crossword puzzle, sing through the song once more, then share a brief testimony.

Extension Activities:

• Have a class competition! Pass out one crossword puzzle to each class, and have each group work together to solve the puzzle. See who can finish first!
• Choose a fun action to do each time you sing one of the keywords from the puzzle. Here are some ideas to get you started – spin, hop on one foot, jump, crouch down low, arms reach high, jumping jacks, etc.
• Skip the puzzle completely and write all 8 keywords on one side of the board.  Call out a clue, then have the kids call out the answer. This is a great way to get your younger primary children involved. Listen for what comes next!
• Take turns singing keywords. Point to one side of the room to sing, then point to the other side for the next keyword. Or, whisper sing these words.
