Have I Done Any Good First Letters
Back when I was a primary music leader a few years ago, my primary kids LOVED any kind of puzzle! My Senior primary kids especially enjoyed showing me just how smart they are!
I’ve created this fun & simple printable logical conclusion puzzle with only the first letter of each word! You’ll also notice that some words have been replaced with pictures. Prep for this activity by printing and cutting out each phrase into word stips.
At the beginning of primary, review the first verse and chorus of Have I Done Any Good (lyrics here!).
Then, tape up the word strips. Hm, these words don’t make any sense! Can you help me decode the puzzle? Let’s sing through the song again and see if we can figure it out.
Sing through the song again, allowing the children to think about the jumbled-up word strips on the board. After you finish the song, ask the children if they have any ideas. What might these letters mean? What do the pictures mean?
Allow some guesses and test it out! Try singing through the song to see if your pattern is right. Have you figured out that each letter represents one word in the song? Nice work!
Focus the rest of the activity on putting the word strips in the correct order! You might do this by singing each line individually and looking for the matching first letter strip. I also have some additional challenges below that might be fun to try!
Once you have all the first letters in the correct order, sing through the song one more time. Everyone did a great job solving the puzzle!

Here are just a few first letter examples from the beginning of the first verse! Can you decode what the emojis mean?

Emoji Guide:
In the puzzle, each time the word, “I” comes up, I’ve replaced it with a smiling emoji. I’ve also replaced words like, “Someone” or “Anyone” with an emoji of a boy raising his hand. There are people all around us looking for help!
You’ll also notice a few other symbols in the printable below. Here’s a quick guide for the emojis used in this first letters puzzle:
😊 = I / Self
🙋 = Others
☁️ = Dream
🏰 = Mansion
❤️ = Love
Extension Activities:
- Print out each page of the puzzle and keep word strips for each page together with a paper clip. Then, place the phrases in an envelope. During singing time, have each class work together to solve their piece of the puzzle! Then, have each class sing only their assigned phrases.
- While the first letters are in order, choose a few word strips to turn around. Can you still sing through the song without some of the clues?
- For a fun senior primary challenge, assign each class a few letters and have them sing the words that begin with that letter!
- Tape the first letter word strips around the room! Have the kids work together to find & arrange the word strips in the correct order!
