We’ve been having so much fun creating different and unique ways to teach Home Can Be a Heaven on Earth (archives) in Primary this year. I hope you’ll take some time introducing this song, even if it’s not on your list, as it’s only included on the Book of Mormon Come Follow Me Primary Songs list and won’t show up again for another 4 years!
Your Primary children will love this Home Can Be a Heaven on Earth interactive picture singing time activity. You’ll sing through the song and open up the door, windows, even pull down the roof and add some extra elements as you tie in all the lyrics that the song talks about and encourage the children to really think about the ways they can help bring that peaceful feeling of heaven into their own homes by their words and actions.

How to Play:
Sing through Home Can Be a Heaven on Earth (flip chart here) before introducing this interactive picture activity. This is a great way to review the lyrics and help transition from any other activities before you begin.
Ask the children what this song is talking about? Where does it take place? Place the home with the blessings backdrop up on the board, secured with magnets.
Let’s see what this song is talking about – let’s sing in again and listen for clues!
Sing through the song and after ask the children what is something they heard from the song? Discuss one of the items that corelates to one of the interactive objects. Reveal how it is hidden within the home!
Continue to sing through the song and then reveal a new aspect from the lyrics.
Finally, sing through the song and interact with the home each step of the song.
1st Verse:
- “When we are filled with love” – Open the door.
- “Bringing happiness and joy” – Open the left window.
- “Rich blessings from above” – Fold down the roof, then re-secure it.
- “Warmth and kindness, charity” – Add the sun with rays to the top right corner.
- “Safety and security” – Open the right window.
- “Making home a part of heaven” – Add the heaven cloud on the bottom. You can alternatively add this piece for the first line of the song, but you’ll need to make sure it is not in the way of your door if you choose that option.
Extension Activities:
- You can instead use the completed scene with various different things to point out and talk about that represent the lyrics. You can put this picture up on the board and ask the same lead questions or pass it from child to child and when the song ends, invite the child that is holding the home to point out something they notice.
