Are you looking for a super fun themed Halloween activity for Primary? What could be better than bring in a little magic with these easy potions for kids!
Don’t worry, it’s super easy and I’ll show you exactly how to make a magic potion and ideas for using them as part of your Singing Time plans!
How to Make a Magic Potion
Magic Potion Ingredients:
- Cups (clear is best!)
- Water
- White vinegar
- Food Coloring
- Baking Soda
- Spoons
- Baking Sheet (recommended)
- Towel (recommended)
DIY Potion for Kids Directions:
Fill your cups only about halfway full to give room for the fizz! Fill with 2 parts water to 1 part vinegar. That might look like 2/3 cup water and 1/3 vinegar.
The higher vinegar content and the more baking soda – the bigger the reaction!
Add a little bit of baking soda to your spoon. In total, I used about 1tsp of baking soda per spoon.
Start with just a little bit of baking soda on your spoon, then add 1-2 food coloring drops. Now, top off the spoon with baking soda so the color is disguised.
Put all your cups on a baking sheet lined with a towel to help contain any mess!
To activate your potion, just mix the spoon into your water/vinegar mixture and stir.

Using Magic Potions in Singing Time:
Pick a child to come up and let them pick which spoon to try. Use the filled spoon to pour right into any one of the cups and stir and watch the magic happen!
Have a color guide ready with each color assigned to a specific song or verse. Then, when orange is revealed, sing through that pre-selected song.
Continue working your way through your potions and singing a variety of songs or different verses!
You can use our cute printable potion jars to write your song titles or a silly way to sing and provide a visual!
Magic Potion Demo Video!
My phone made this cute short video clip of one of my magic potions coming to life! I just loved this cute clip, that I wanted to share so you can visualize the magic just a little better.
More Ways to Use DIY Magic Potions!
- Use magic potions to perfect a song or verse. When you master it, then let the kids try out one of your potions!
- Write out all the lyrics of your song in the potion colors you are using. After singing through the song, mix a potion and erase all the words in the matching color.
- Make 2 of each color you decide to make. When the kids make a match (the 2nd cup of a color) let them pick a silly way to sing or a choice of song to sing!
