You’ll have so much fun teaching I Am Like a Star (archives) during Singing Time with this interactive lesson plan. With this I Am Like a Star Melody Chart you’ll sing through the song and follow along with the movement of the melody to help the children visualize how the music and notes connect with the song lyrics.
I Am Like a Star Melody Chart
Sing through I am Like a Star (flip chart here) once, before this activity. This will help you gather the Primary children’s attention and transition from another activity before introducing something else to focus on.
Post the melody map up on the board and ask the children what they see. This line shows you the movement of the notes in the song. Can your voice follow along with the movement rising in pitch along with the line?
Sing through the song and practice following along with the movement of the melody.
What do you notice as you sing? What happens when the line stays straight? How long should you hold those notes? Sing through the song again and notice the held out notes as you sing.
What about the quick up and down notes? What do those feel like to sing? Let’s sing through the song again and notice the quick note moves as we sing.
Continue to sing through the song as you draw the melody line in the air.
Extension Activities:
- Use the melody chart version with picture boxes missing. Have the children pair the pictures where they belong along the melody.
- You can optionally add an action to each of these 6 symbols:
- Star – Flash your hands like you are shining a light
- World – Make your arms into a big circle over your head
- See – Put your hand over your eyes like you are shading form the sun
- Say – Cup your hands around your mouth like a megaphone
- Day – Pat your lap
- Loves – Form your hands into a heart shape
- Invite the children to sit and stand with the movement of the notes. For example on the first line of the song you would start sitting (or kneeling) and then bump slightly up and back down while in your seat. Raise up a bit higher and longer, then back down to your seat. Bump up and then stand. For the highest notes on the 3rd line, you’ll stand on your tip toes!
- Pair the melody chart with a finger light an draw the melody out in front of you tracing the melody line with your finger light.
