I Lived in Heaven Wave Pattern

Have you ever been in a stadium filled with people and tried doing the “wave?” It’s so fun! Recreate this fun crowd effect in your primary room as you review this song together.

The basic idea behind creating the “wave” is to throw your arms in the air right after the person next to you. It may feel silly, but it looks really cool if everyone does it!

For this purposeful movement activity (more ideas like this!), we’ll be moving a big wave through the room that corresponds with the natural flow of the song. Let’s jump in and I’ll walk you through it!

How to Play:

At the beginning of singing time, sing through one verse of I Lived in Heaven. Grab a copy of our I Lived in Heaven flip chart for this song with lyrics and visuals to follow! Since this movement pattern follows the song lyrics, you’ll want to be familiar with the words.

Then, invite 5 volunteers to come demonstrate the wave by having the children raise their arms up high right after their neighbor. See how fast you can do it! Does it look like an ocean wave?

Now, let’s try making a big wave all together! I recommend trying the wave out once before adding in the music to avoid any confusion.

Starting with a child sitting on the far left side of the room, create a wave that moves to the right as you sing, “I lived in heaven a.” The wave should be all the way to the other side by the end of the phrase.

Then, move the wave in the opposite direction for the line, “long time ago it is.” Have all the children spin in a circle for the long note, “True.”

I’ve created helpful cue cards to signal to the children which direction the wave is moving. Simply hold up one cue card at a time as you move the wave in each direction. If you are feeling extra energetic, you can run from one side to the other while holding the sign just like they do in a stadium.

Continue switching directions of your wave and repeat this pattern for the rest of the song. Pretty cool, right?

Wave Pattern:

I’ve included a simple outline for this wave pattern below. However, feel free to start simple and work up to it! For example, you might start by creating a wave just once during the song. Then, add another wave at a different point in the song!

  • Wave Right =“I lived in heaven a –,” “lived there and loved there with, “Then Heav’nly Father,” “All about earth and”
  • Wave Left = “Long time ago it is,” “people I know, so did,” “presented a beautiful,” “eternal salvation for”
  • Spin = “true,” “you,” “plan,” “man”

Extension Activities:

  • Create an “opposite” wave by starting with your arms in the air, then quickly swooping your arms downward.
  • Try starting the wave with a child sitting in the middle of the room, with the wave going in both directions!
  • Choose another action for those long notes. Here are some ideas to spark your creativity:  Hop like a rabbit, hide like a turtle, stomp like an elephant, howl like a wolf.
  • Have the kids stand in a big circle. Start the wave with one child until it moves through the entire circle. Then, move the wave in the opposite direction.
  • Choose a leader to come up and hold the cue cards. Have your leader choose when to start the wave and which direction it should go!
