What better way to teach this sweet Mother’s Day Primary song than with these fun I Often Go Walking Movement Actions. You’ll add a variety of actions to match the song lyrics to help the Primary children easily remember the words.

I Often Go Walking Movement Actions
Sing through I Often Go Walking using this flip chart once, before introducing the movement actions.
Sing through the first line of the song and demonstrate the two actions for the first line. Start by walking in place as you sing “I often go walking” and then spin once as you sing “in meadows of clover.” Can you follow my lead? Let’s try those actions together.
Demonstrate the 2nd line of actions by scooping your arms out in front of you as you gather all the flowers and then tuck your arms into your chest as you sing “I gather armfuls.” Next, pat your lap with each syllable as you sing “Bloss- / -oms / of / blue.” Try those actions together. Now start at the beginning and try all the actions you’ve learned so far.
Continue to add actions as you learn the song line by line.
I Often Go Walking Movement Actions for the 1st Verse:
- Walk in place on “I often go walking”
- Spin on “Meadows of clover”
- Scoop your arms up and tuck to your chest “I gather armfuls”
- Pat lap on “Blossoms of blue”
- Scoop your arms up and tuck to your chest “I gather the blossoms”
- Sweep arm on “The whole meadow over”
- Hug self on “Dear mother all flowers”
- Point outward (to your mother!) on “Remind me of you”
Extension Activities:
- Write the words up on the board, then have the children try to match the actions to the song lyrics. Can they rearrange them to where they should go? This would be a fun challenge for your senior primary!
- Introduce just 2 actions each time singing through the song. You might start with some of the actions that repeat, such as “gather”, spinning, and pointing at the end of the song. Build up your actions as you sing through the song over and over.
- Have the children help you come up with new movements for some of the different actions. What might you do to show gather? Or to show love?
