I love the imagery used in this song! This song really testifies of the miracle of God’s creations. As you teach this song in primary, visualize the lyrics by organizing pictures that represent different parts of the Creation story!
God Called it Good Word Map
I am stoked to share this word map with you. I think the Creation story is best taught visually (more visual intrigue activities) because Heavenly Father’s creations are all around us! For this activity, we’ll create a simple map with words and pictures that represent different elements of God’s creations.
I’ve compiled several pictures that represent each day of creation and organized them in the printable included later in this post. You’ll want to cut out all the pictures beforehand and bring magnets or tape to put your map on the board.
By the end of singing time, you’ll have a map that looks like this:
Sing through God Called it Good with this flip chart once before introducing this activity. I love starting with music, as it invites the Spirit and helps refresh your memory.
Then, place the words, “God Called it Good” in the center of the board. Who can tell me what happened on the first day of God’s creations? That’s right – Heavenly Father created light. Choose a volunteer to come up and put the sun on the board.
What else did Heavenly Father create? Listen for ideas and have the children come up one at a time to add an element to the word map.
Another option is to listen to the lyrics and try to add the elements in the order that they appear in the song. Either way, this word map is a great way to help your primary children visualize the song lyrics and connect with their Come, Follow Me scripture learning.
Once you have put together your word map, sing through the song once more and share your testimony.
Word Map By Days of Creation:
Here’s a quick outline of each part of the Creation story with specific references to lyrics in the song. Grab the printable version to make for an easy singing time prep! You’ll notice that a few of the pictures overlap a bit. That’s okay!
- Day 1 – God divided the light from darkness – Sun
- Day 2 – God organized heaven and earth – Earth & Clouds
- Day 3 – God divided land and sea and planted seeds – Seedling, Mountains, Sea/Clouds
- Day 4 – God created the Sun, Moon, and Stars to provide light – Sun, Moon & Stars
- Day 5 – God created animals – Bird, Dolphin, Zebra
- Day 6 – God created man and woman in His image – Puzzle pieces of Adam & Eve
- Day 7 – God rested
Extension Activities:
- Read together the Genesis 1 account of God’s creations in the scriptures. Read one verse and add one element to the word map at a time. Then sing through the song, listening for each day.
- Randomly pass out the pictures. As you sing, pause and ask – “Who has the sun? Come add it to the board!”
- Write song phrases on one side of the board and tape pictures on the other. Match each picture with its corresponding song phrase.
- Play a game of Creation Pictionary. Write all the days of creation on strips of paper. Choose a volunteer to come up and pick one paper. Draw a picture to represent what was created, and have the rest of the group guess!
- Can you put all the pictures in order! Write numbers 1-6 on the board. Scramble all the pictures and have the children organize the pictures by day of creation.
