I Stand All Amazed Clap Instead

This clap instead idea is the perfect way to help your primary children focus on the lyrics in a fun & engaging way!

The basic idea behind this living music activity is to replace key words in the song with actions. I’ve created a pattern with 4 different actions that each correspond with a word or word type in this sweet hymn.

For this activity, I chose to focus on the first verse of the hymn. However, this activity could easily be adapted to work for any verse you are teaching!

At the beginning of singing time, start by singing through the first verse and chorus once. If the lyrics are still a little shaky, snag a copy of our I Stand All Amazed flip chart and follow along with the lyrics! This is a great way to keep the song fresh in their minds before introducing movement.

Can anyone tell me what type of things Jesus experienced as part of the Atonement? *Hint – There are lots of clues in the song. This is a great time to reference the lyrics!

In the song, we learn that He “suffered,” “bled and died” and was “crucified.” Let’s sing the song again. This time, listen closely and snap your fingers when we sing these words!

If you’d like to keep things simple, choose one action at a time to focus on. Each time you sing through the song, try a different clap instead action! You can either try one action at a time or work up to all 4 actions!

If your primary children are up for the challenge, post the entire clap instead poster with symbols and colors to differentiate between each action. Then, singing through the song using all 4 clap instead actions!

Have some fun trying out these actions and listening for those key words in the song! At the end of singing time, conclude with your testimony of Jesus Christ’s Atonement.

Extension Activities:

  • Challenge your Senior primary children by adding in a fifth action for references to yourself! Point to yourself or give yourself a big hug on words like, “I,” “My,” “Me,” or “My.”
  • Assign one action to each class. Sing through the song with each class doing only their actions along with the rest of the lyrics. Then, switch around the actions so that each class can try a few!
  • For a fun twist, sing ONLY the clap instead words and hum on all other words in the song.
  • Write each clap instead action on a piece of paper and put the papers in a bowl. Pick a new action each time you sing through the song!
