Jesus Loves Me Missing Letters
For a unique way to focus on the lyrics of the song, Jesus Loves Me (archives), solve for each missing letter in this word puzzle! In preparation for this activity, I started by choosing a few words throughout the song. Then, I chose 1-3 letters from each word to remove.
As you sing this song together, challenge your primary children to figure out which letters are missing from each word!
Since I didn’t want it to be too tricky, I tried to make sure each word was still recognizable! This activity will involve some spelling, so it is definitely geared more toward older primary kids.
However, if you’d like to be able to use this activity for all your primary children, see some of my extension ideas later in this post! I’ve included some options there for adapting this activity for younger primary kiddos.

Start by singing through the first verse and chorus of Jesus Loves Me at the beginning of primary. This is a great way to encourage reverence and refresh the song, especially since it may be unfamiliar to your primary children.
Then, post the missing letters poster on the board. Uh, oh! It looks like some letters are missing! Let’s see if we can solve the puzzle.
Sing through the song again, listening carefully for the incomplete words. Starting with the phrase, “Jesus loves me,” see if the children can identify the word with missing letters.

That’s right! The word, “Jesus” is missing some letters! Does anyone know which letters are missing? Choose a volunteer to come up and fill in the missing letters with a marker or pencil.
Then, move on to the next phrase. Continue singing and solving for the missing letters as you work your way through the song. I recommend singing through the song each time you complete a word so that you get in lots of repetition.
Awesome detective skills! Let’s sing through the song one more time now that we have all the words.

Missing Letter Examples:
I’ve included missing letter phrases for the first verse of this song below. Since the chorus has a lot of repetition, I decided to just focus on the verse for this activity.

- To adapt this activity for younger primary children, omit one word from each phrase. Draw simple images or print pictures to symbolize each missing word. Then, have the kids replace the incomplete phrase with the correct image. For example, draw a bumblebee to replace the letters “B – E” in the word “Belong.”
- Cut out each phrase into word strips and arrange them randomly on the board. As you sing, have the children put each phrase in the correct order.
- Make it a group challenge by giving each class 1-2 phrases with missing letters. Have each class solve for their missing letters and sing their assigned phrases.
