Jesus Said Love Everyone Egg Carton Rhythms
Did you know you can create a musical instrument with something you probably have in your refrigerator? That’s right! Egg carton instruments are pretty simple to make and can be used in lots of different ways.
If you are making your own egg carton instruments for primary, don’t be afraid to ask your ward members for clean egg carton donations. You may get some funny looks, but it will be worth it!
For this egg carton rhythm pattern, you’ll want to have enough egg cartons for all your primary children, or at least enough to share! You’ll also want some unsharpened pencils to use as “drumsticks.”
Before demonstrating the pattern and passing out egg cartons, start with a quick review of Jesus Said Love Everyone using this flipchart.
Then, bring out your egg carton instrument and a pencil and give it a few taps. Today we are going to be using an instrument that is a little out of the ordinary!
Demonstrate the first action in the pattern by swishing your pencil down the grooves of the egg carton. Can you try it with me?
Pass out the egg cartons and try a “swish!” Add in the music by singing “Jesus said love everyone as you swish your pencil on the egg cartons.
Now let’s try some taps! Tap on each syllable of the phrase, “Treat them kind-ly too.” There’s really no wrong way to do this action! I like to tap on the bottom of each divot on the egg carton, but you could also tap the sides!
Those are the only two actions we’ll need for the pattern! Just repeat those two actions for the last two song phrases. I bet we can do the whole song! Let’s try it together!
I love how simple this rhythm pattern is. It makes for an easy attention-grabber that gives everyone an opportunity to participate! Take turns tapping along with this fun egg carton rhythms pattern as you sing this short, but sweet primary song.
Egg Carton Rhythm Pattern:
I’ve included the full egg carton rhythm pattern for this song below. This pattern is meant to be super simple so that both Junior and Senior primary children can catch on quickly! Make sure to grab the printable version of this pattern later in this post for some helpful visuals as you teach this pattern.
*Alternate every other line throughout
- Swish – Starting at the top of your egg carton, loosely weave the pencil in between the grooves to create a fun “swish” sound. (“Jesus said love ev’ryone” and “when your heart is filled with love”).
- Tap – Tap each divot in the carton on each syllable. (“treat them kind-ly too” and “oth-ers will love you.”
Extension Activities:
- Use the egg cartons to explore dynamics! How quietly can you make your “swish” sound? Now tap as loudly as you can! Try alternating the dynamics throughout the song.
- Have one side of the room do all the swishes and have the other side do all the taps. Alternate singing every other line while playing your assigned rhythm!
- Try tapping on all the words that reference how we can love – “Love”, “Kindly,” “Heart.” Swish on all other words!
- Double-time! Use the same rhythm pattern, but speed it up by alternating actions within each phrase. Here’s an example: Jesus said / love ev/’ry-one (Slash mark indicates switching from swishes to taps.
- Flip the pattern! Try starting with taps, then moving to swishes. Or, have one side start with taps while the other side starts with swishes. Be ready for chaos!
