I truly believe that singing time is a precious and crucial time to help our primary children learn about and develop their testimonies of the Savior. I have had many experiences where the words of a primary song came to my mind just when I needed it most.
As you teach this song about loving others, focus on ways that the Savior showed love to others during His time on earth by sharing examples from the scriptures.
I’ve created a simple printable later in this post with 8 notable stories about the Savior’s love that quickly came to my mind as I thought about this topic. There are so many more examples from the scriptures, so take some time before primary to read and mark a few of your personal favorites!
Before introducing this activity, sing through Jesus Said Love Everyone (flip chart here) once. Can anyone tell me what this song is about? That’s right! This song teaches us to love others. Who was the best example of love? Jesus!
For this activity, I recommend starting with stories that the children already know! Ask if anyone can think of a time in the scriptures when Jesus showed love to someone. This is a great way to let the children share what they are learning at home and in primary.
Then, bring in a picture of a story about Jesus’ life. The gospel art kit has lots of great images that are likely available in your building library. You may also feel free to print your own!
If you decide to use the stories included in our printable, simply ask for a volunteer to come read one of the stories. Then, ask the children to summarize how Jesus showed love in each story. Each time you read a story about Jesus, sing through the song again.
I would absolutely be sure to discuss the Savior’s Atonement as His ultimate expression of love for all God’s children as you share these stories. This can be a beautiful way to conclude this activity and share your testimony of the Savior.
Stories From Jesus Examples:
I have included just a few examples of stories that depict the Savior’s love. I’ve created mini cards with scripture references for each of these stories later in this post. There are so many wonderful stories to choose from, so it was hard to only include a few! I’d love to hear what stories you share in your primary room!
- Jesus heals the blind man
- Jesus heals the 10 lepers
- Jesus calms the storm
- Jesus meets the woman at the well
- Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead
- Jesus washes the apostles’ feet
- Jesus sits and dines with sinners
- Jesus teaches the ‘Sermon on the Mount’
Extension Activities:
- Tape pictures of Bible stories of Jesus around the room. Each time you sing, pick a volunteer to choose one picture to read aloud. Continue until you have collected all the pictures!
- Divide the scripture stories between classes. Have each class read their story, then have a spokesperson summarize the story for the group.
- Play a matching game! Print two copies of each picture and arrange them on the board, hiding each picture. Turn over two cards at a time. If they match, sing through the song! If they don’t match, turn each card back over and try again!
