Give your Senior Primary children a challenge with this fun My Own Sacred Grove First Letters singing time activity! It’s a great way to dive into teaching My Own Sacred Grove (archives) or reviewing the song if you’ve already learned it. I’ll show you how to go line by line or use this activity as a review below.

My Own Sacred Grove First Letters
Teach a line of My Own Sacred Grove with this flip chart to help and then post the first letters that go with it. Share that each letter represents one word and can be a clue as we go through the song.
Continue to teach say, then sing, then sing all together the next line of the song. Post the next first letters line. Then start from the beginning singing through the song as far as you have taught.
Work your way through the first verse line by line with the first letter clues.
When you’ve finished teaching the first verse pull down the first letter cards and scramble them up. Put them on the table and invite a child to come up front and unscramble them and put them back in order while you sing through the verse.
Continue on to teaching the chorus and building up the song and adding to the unscramble challenge after each part.
Extension Activities:
- To turn this activity into a review activity instead of teaching the song line by line, simply post all of the first letter cards on the board. You can post them in order or out of order. Ask the Primary children what they see. Can they help you decode the puzzle? Have them either decode what the puzzle is (first letters) or put them in order as you sing.
- Use this activity as a small group challenge. Print out the 1-page version and cut the page in half then into strips. Put the first letter strips into an envelope. Divide the kids into small groups, preferably 3-5 children or by class. Have them work together as you sing through the song to figure out the code and unscramble the puzzle.
- After you’ve finished the decoding or teaching the song, add a fun action to go with each different color.
