Sing Pioneer Children Sang as They Walked once, before introducing this activity.
What are the children doing in this song? Did you hear it? Yes! They walked! Where did they walk to? All the way across the country to the Salt Lake Valley. Let’s practice walking just like the Pioneer children.
Invite a child to come up and randomly select one of your walking styles cards. Reveal the walking style and invite all the children to stand and join you in walking as you sing the song together.
Continue to try new walking styles as you sing through the song with repetition.
Pioneer Children Walking Styles
- Walk Slow – Walk slowly with just 1-2 steps per measure
- Walk Fast – Walk a quick pace, as fast as you can in place
- Walk with High Knees – Raise those knees up high with each step
- Walk Sideways – Walk to the right by stepping with your right foot to the right of you, without turning your body. Bring the left foot to the right and then repeat.
Extension Activities:
- Print two copies of each walking style. Invite a child to play a game of memory match until you find two matching walking styles. Then, sing through the song with your pair you’ve made.
- Divide the room into two groups and let each group pick a walking style. Which group can follow their walking directions best?
