Primary New Year Are You Smarter Than Primary?
There are so many ways to start off a new singing time year! For example, you might be setting goals for the new year or choosing new songs to work on! If you are a brand new music leader, check out my top tips for preparing for a new year in primary!
This fun activity based on the classic television show, “Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader” is a great way to kick off the new year! For this activity, review previous primary songs while playing a light-hearted competition!
It’s time for a good old fashioned song quiz! Ask a special guest, such as a bishopric member, missionary, or other ward member to join you for primary! Be sure to check with them in advance.
I’ve created a printable with 12 quiz questions that come directly from primary songs. These questions range from fill in the blanks to unscramble the letters and finish the sentence.
Print out a copy of the song quiz questions in our printable, as well as the key. This activity contains questions from several different primary songs. These songs will likely be familiar to your primary children, but there are a few tricky ones!
Let’s play “Are You Smarter than Primary?” Keep score on the board for primary versus guests or just play for fun!
Start by choosing one child to come to the front of the board, along with your special guest. Read one question. Contestants can either answer by raising their hands or pressing a buzzer.
For some extra fun, grab these classroom buzzers from Amazon! These buzzers are a great way to raise the stakes and make it feel more like a real competition!
If a contestant answers correctly, they get a point! If they guess incorrectly, the other contestant has an opportunity to guess. Hints can be given by sharing the song that the question comes from. Each time a question is answered correctly, sing through the song!
Continue asking questions until you run out of time or questions. See which team has the most points at the end and thank your special guest for participating in the game!
Sample Quiz Questions:
The questions in this quiz are based on well-known primary songs from the Children’s Songbook. Most of these questions are fairly simple, but there are a few tricky ones thrown in the mix! Here are some examples of the questions included in the printable.
- Finish the Sentence: “Walk beside me, help me… (Answer: “Find the way!” – From “I am a Child of God”).
- Fill in the Blanks: “Whenever I feel the … on my face or the … as it rushes by.” (Answer: “Rain,” and “wind,” – From “My Heavenly Father Loves Me”)
- Where did the foolish man build his house? (Answer: On the sand! – From “The Wise Man and the Foolish Man”)
- Unscramble the Letters: “Something that Jesus told Lissicdpe” (Answer: Disciples – From “A Child’s Prayer”)
- Finish the Sentence: “And seek for God’s light to direct me from …” (Answer: “Birth” – From “I Will Follow God’s Plan).
Extension Activities:
- Have your special guest create a “team” of their own. Encourage them to bring a few other individuals to play on their team to compete against primary!
- Guess the song! After answering each question, see how quickly the class can guess the primary song!
- Work through all the questions first! Then, once the competition is over, put all the song titles in a jar and randomly choose a few to sing!
- Have each class create their own team. Allow teams to collaborate on answers and see which team can earn the most points!
