Book of Mormon Stories Body Rhythm Partners
Sing through Book of Mormon Stories (flip chart here) once, before introducing this pattern.
Demonstrate the first four actions (Clap / Lap / Across / Across) as you sing “Book of Mormon”. Have the children try it when you in the air, without a partner yet, and sing those first few words. Wonderful, let’s try that twice!
Sing the first measure “Book of Mormon stories that my” as you do the pattern twice.
Turn and let’s try it with a partner. Can you do it together? Clap / Lap / Across / Across and repeat.
Great, now watch me again, I’m going to switch it just a little. Demonstrate the last half of the sequence (Clap / Lap / Clap / Lap / Across / Across / Across / Pause). What did you notice? Is it the same? It looks pretty similar, but it is a little different isn’t it. Let’s try that part. Try the pattern together in the air. Sing through that line of the song and try the pattern “teacher tells to me.” Let’s try it with a partner.
Now, can we put that whole pattern together? Put the pattern poster up on the board so the children can follow along as you sing. Pretty soon, it’ll become like second nature as they follow along with this fun repeating pattern that follows the feeling of the music.
Body Rhythm Partners Pattern:
- CLAP: Clap both hands together
- PAT: Pat both hands down onto lap
- ACROSS: Clap both hands across to your partner as they clap towards you
- PAUSE: One 1/8 note short pause at the end of the line
Each line of the song (2 measures) will follow this pattern.
You will repeat the pattern 4 times to fill the entire song.
CLAP – LAP – ACROSS – ACROSS
CLAP – LAP – ACROSS – ACROSS
CLAP – LAP – CLAP – LAP
ACROSS – ACROSS – ACROSS – PAUSE
Extension Activities:
- Have the children come up with their own action to do with a partner and replace all of the clap straight across actions with the new action! They could, for example, do a funky handshake they come up with together.
- After mastering the pattern with groups of two, join two groups together! Now, try the pattern with groups of 4! You’ll clap across to your partner by clapping both hands away from your body, one to the partner on your left and one to the partner on your right.
