I love bringing in LOTS of different musical instruments and manipulatives into Primary! So what better way to have a little fun with a variety of instruments than with these printable musical instruments playdoh mats!
This will give you a great way to teach the kiddos a little about the different instruments they might see, hear in the music, or get to use in the Primary room and is a fun spin-off lesson that might be fun for after you’ve finished the Primary Program and are looking for a fun activity that is music themed but not all about learning a new song for one week. 🙂
Depending on your Primary size and structure, this may or may not be appropriate for your actual singing time. But you could also use this fun set of printables for an activity days lesson or print them for use in your own home for preschool and homeschool music lessons!

Some Ideas for Using these in Activity Days, Primary or at Home:
Bring in a variety of REAL instruments, and their matching playdoh mat. Have the kids match the instruments. Then play the instrument while they recreate it.
Play a clip of what each instrument sounds like. Have the kids guess what instrument makes that sound, then roll out the shape and recreate it with playdoh!
Fold up the bottom line with the instrument name. See how many the kids can name! You could start by teaching them the names of the instruments in order, have them repeat them with you a few times. Then see how many they remember!
Mix up the order and try again – can they still remember their names?
I personally love using kinetic sand on playdoh mats! It’s so quick and easy to clean since it doesn’t dry and get hard. It’s also SO fun to play with and it shapes really easily.
Let the kids try using some of the instruments (when appropriate).
Play a variety of different Primary songs with different instruments! I’m sure you can find several played with a violin, but can you find one of the more upbeat Primary songs played with a drum or with a trumpet? How fun would that be!
