Are you looking for a tried-and-true way to review The Covenant (archives) in primary this month? This The Covenant Match the Lyrics activity may be just right for you! For a fun way to see just how well your primary children know this song, find each matching pair of word strips!

The Covenant Match the Lyrics
I call this matching activity “tried-and-true” because it really is. When I served as a music leader, I loved challenging the older kids by having them put together fragments of the song like a puzzle.
The basic idea behind this logical conclusions (more learning style ideas) matching game is to match each set of words given to complete each song phrase! This activity works with ANY primary song.

I recently heard the new Shawna Edwards song, “The Covenant.” It is beautiful! I especially love the reminder in the chorus of Heavenly Father’s promise to be with us always.
This song can be a great addition to your Come Follow Old Testament plans! Since this song is likely to be unfamiliar to your primary children, I thought it would be fun to use this matching game to really focus in on the lyrics.
For this activity, I’ve created word strips with short fragments of each phrase in the song. You’ll want to do a little bit of prep work and cut out all these word strips ahead of time. You can easily keep the blue and green words separate using Ziploc bags.
How to Play:
At the beginning of singing time, start by singing through the first verse of The Covenant (flip chart here!)
Then, tape all the “blue” words on the left-hand side of the board and all the “green” words on the right-hand side. Can anyone find the first phrase of the song?
Ask for a volunteer to come up and find the words, “A covenant was given.” Awesome! What comes next? You’re right – “a long time ago.” Tape these words next to each other to form a sentence.

You definitely don’t have to match the lyrics in order, but it can make the activity a little easier. Find a few more matches, then pause to sing the song again as you “listen for clues.” If you get stuck, try singing the phrase to spark their memory.
This activity provides a lot of opportunities for helpers, so try to give as many turns as you can until you match all the lyrics. You can even get your Sunbeams involved by pairing them with an older primary kiddo. This can work wonders in singing time!
Once you have found all the matches, sing through the song once more before closing with your testimony. As we teach the gospel through music, we can help equip our primary children with the foundation of their own testimony.

Match the Lyrics Examples:
Here are just a few examples of how this activity works. Although you can easily write out these phrases, why not grab the printable word strips later in this post and save some prep time! How quickly can you finish each phrase?
- A covenant was given … a long time ago
- God promised … to bless them
- If they would be … steadfast and faithful
- Surely the Lord … is in this place
- And keep me forever … safe in His care

Extension Activities:
- Divide the matches into envelopes and pass out one envelope to each class. Have each class work together to match their lyrics.
- Give each child one word strip and walk around the room to find their “match” while they sing.
- Try a call-and-response to get your younger primary children involved. Once you have found all the matches, sing one “blue” phrase at a time and see if the kids can finish the phrase.
- Assign a “Blue Team” and a “Green Team.” Take turns singing song phrases and see which side can sing louder, more reverently, etc.
